First thing you notice when you walk into Fightgirl Fitness, are the pink walls, the pink punching bags and the big power rig. Second thing you notice are the strong, confident women that hang out (and probably workout) in there. Totally my kind of crowd 😀
From the looks of it alone, one can tell that this is a gym that caters specifically to women…just not any kind of women, but those who are looking to be challenged and empowered through fitness, community, strength and a combination of martial arts and CrossFit inspired workouts.
Last Saturday, Fightgirl Fitness had an open house where I had to opportunity to meet and chat with owner Rebecca Law, who took the time to show me around, introduce me to some of her trainers and tell me all about her gym: “The focus for our clients is not on weight loss but on building strength and confidence and on becoming healthy by setting and achieving fitness goals.
All of the coaches at Fightgirl are Crossfit Level 1 Trainers but we all also train in Muay Thai as well. We are a CrossFit/Kickboxing hybrid but not affiliated with CrossFit since we wanted to integrate martial arts. Another thing that sets us apart is our fitness level ranking system. Whereas most martial arts places have a belt promotion system, we have an integrated kickboxing/fitness ranking system. All of our clients start at the yellow level. There are 5 color rankings which are further divided into three sublevels each. It gives everyone a goal to work towards.”
At the open house I also had the opportunity to chat a bit with coach Richard Parr who happens to not only be part of Fightgirl, but is also one of the top Sports Nutritionist in Fresno (and probably California). A couple of my workout buddies (who I thought looked hot already) started working with Richard on their nutrition just a couple of months ago and all of the sudden: BOOOOOMMM they look even more fit and amazinggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure how that happened but they won’t stop talking about it and whatever they did worked out wonders so I will be following up with Richard in the next couple of weeks to find the secret 😀 …either way, having him involved is another things that sets Fightgirl apart.
I didn’t get a chance to experience a workout this time, but Rebecca invited me to come back and try one of her classes (she mentioned Thursday night…that is probably when most of the butt kicking occurs :P) so hopefully I will get to come back in a couple of weeks and write all about it. Either way, having a conversation with another girl who is passionate about fitness as me, is just as uplifting as an amazing workout. That Saturday, I came home feeling good. I am looking forward to coming back for more!!!
