Fresno is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association and you have the chance to help decide how the money will be spent.
For the fourth year, the NRPA is partnering with The Walt Disney Company on the Meet Me at the Park Earth Month campaign, which helps fund local park improvement projects across the country.
Other California cities receiving the grant are Los Angeles and San Francisco. Among the 15 communities being awarded, Fresno is one of the smallest.
“At NRPA we believe everyone deserves a great park,” says Lori Robertson, NRPA director of conservation. “Everyone is encouraged to join us in giving back to the places that share so much of our lives by participating in this year’s campaign.”
Three Fresno park projects are eligible to receive the $20,000 grant. It’s up to voters to decide which project will receive the funds. The three projects are:
F.R.O.G. (Fresno Recreation Outdoor Group)
This program would provide outdoor adventures, including junior naturalist summer camps, naturalist workshops, interpretive hikes led by California Certified Naturalists, and camping trips for the whole family to enjoy. Learn more about F.R.O.G. here.
Youth Sports
A grant for the City of Fresno Youth Sports Program would provide portable lighting at two neighborhood parks. Additional lighting would allow more play time and a safe environment for participates and families who can play various sports on the lighted fields. Read more about youth sports here.
Circuit Sports
This program would provide the opportunity for youth to experience a variety of sports programs while developing motor and social learning skills.

If you’re not a Fresno citizen, you can help your city win the $20,000 grant money, as well. All you have to do is head to NRPA.org/Disney to nominate your city. The community with the most nominations will receive the grant funding. Plus, everyone who nominates a city will be entered into a drawing for a GoPro Prize Pack.
The Fresno park project that received last year’s $20,000 grant was the Highway City Community Science Center’s summer camp program, which taught kids science and life skills through hiking, canoeing, fishing, and more. You can learn more about the winning projects in other cities by clicking here.
