Readers of the FresYes outdoors section can easily tell you I have a love that shines through for a number of things.
First and foremost would be getting people excited about exercising outdoors with a close second being my abundant joy found on and around the San Joaquin River. What I don’t write about is being a part of the medical community and how whole body health is the root of many of my families adventures. Being the Dr’s husband and co-owner of a medical office in town gives me the daily opportunity to talk to members of the FresYes community about their health, becoming physically fit and encouraging them to get outside. Having said all of this I can hardly hide how excited I was getting an email from family friend and member of the San Joaquin River Parkway Conservation Trust Outreach Manager, Finn Telles about their new outdoors/health program in the form of Walk with a Doc in partnership with the Fresno-Madera Medical Society.
The format is an easy one for anyone to embrace that has been wanting to start getting outside but may have reservations. Maybe you have been thinking about it but you have always been told get your Dr’s advice first? Well at Walk with a Doc you are able to get outside, go for a walk and have a Dr there to talk to about your health or just ask random health related questions as you stroll along the river trail.
“Walk with a Doc is a great program through which residents of our community can get both exercise and free discussion about medical issues. A thirty minute walk five days a week can reduce the risk of heart attack by as much as thirty percent” said Dr. John G. Telles, a Fresno cardiologist who will be attending some of the walk throughout the year.
It’s no surprise that the first walk of the year this past Saturday was successful with 3 Dr’s, 17 walkers and a couple of 4 legged friends taking to the trails on an overcast FresYes February morning. Walkers and Dr’s had such a great experience that I can only assume that walk number 2 on March 21st will be an even greater success. Finn tells me that every third Saturday from here on this year they will be meeting at the River Center and Walking with the Doc. That’s a lot of miles and minutes of unbilled time to talk to some of the best Dr’s FresYes has to offer. That means if you have been on the fence…or couch thinking about getting outside but not sure about it that you have 10 more chances this year to get outside, enjoy the river and Walk with a Doc.
