The bad air quality at Lamonica Stadium didn’t stop fans from packing both sides of the stadium. The 13th ranked Clovis West Golden Eagles played host to the 12th ranked Clovis Cougars in the final regular season game for both teams.
Darian Owens lined up at Wide Receiver
After starting the season 0-2, the Clovis Cougars won four games in a row and was turning their season around. Quarterback Evan Geiger was coming into his own showing a great balance of running and passing. However losses to Central and Clovis North spoiled the Cougars chances of winning a TRAC championship. Clovis has potential of winning the upcoming division 1 tournament still. They play tough teams well, and show that they never give up.

There were high expectations for Clovis West this year. With emerging stars such as Kordel Hoffman, Darian Owens, and Jordan Mendoza; the Golden Eagles had the talent on offense to have a dominant season. They won their first two games of the season, but then went on to lose four games in a row. Clovis West has since rebounded by winning three in a row. All that’s on the line now for these two teams is playoff seeding for the division 1 tournament, and bragging rights. Clovis West hasn’t beaten Clovis since 2011.
Both teams fought hard in the trenches
The Cougars started with the ball and they did not disappoint. They marched down the field with a “text book” four minute drive that ended with an Evan Geigar five yard quarterback tuck and run for a touchdown (7-0). They made that scoring drive look easy with a fine mixture of runs and passes. Besides that score, the only big highlight of the first quarter was a blocked field goal by Clovis West.

The Cougars added to their lead in the second quarter when running back Fabian Serna powered his way into the end zone for a 13 yard touchdown (14-0). The scoring drive was impressive as it consisted mostly of smash mouth runs. Clovis West Quarterback Kordel Hoffman struggled to get the ball to his wide receivers fast enough, and had to tuck the ball away and try to run for positive yardage. These blown plays stopped costly drives for the Golden Eagles. The score at halftime was 14-0.

The third quarter seemed promising for Clovis West. They scored on the first drive of the second half. A trick play touchdown was perfected when wide receiver Maxwell Bessard completed a one yard touchdown pass to his fellow wide receiver Darian Owens. After the PAT was blocked, the score was (14-6). The cougars now had a slim lead. The third quarter also featured some hard running by Golden Eagles running back Jordan Mendoza, and some strategic scrambling by quarterback Kordel Hoffman.

Clovis West’s hopes were crushed in the fourth quarter. After both teams were playing good defense and stopping each other from scoring; Clovis West fumbled the ball. Kordel Hoffman attempted a quarterback draw play up the middle and was met by a wall of Cougar defenders. During the collision Hoffman fumbled the ball and a big pile formed at the spot of the fumble. After a few seconds, the ball rolled out from under the pile slowly and was sitting in a spot where no one could find it for a couple seconds. This is when Clovis defensive back Josh Hokit located the ball and picked it up. Not yet hearing a whistle, Josh sprinted to the end zone while being chased by Clovis West’s offense for a 70 yard fumble return for a touchdown (21-6). Clovis West then fumbled on the very next drive to seal the deal. Clovis beat Clovis West for a third year in a row with the score of 21-6. The student section, also known as “the cougar den”, celebrated the victory by throwing powder in the air similar to LeBron James’ pregame ritual. This game was over.

Clovis improves to 6-4 and finishes the regular season with a winning record. Clovis West finishes the regular season with a record of 5-5, and finishes the regular season with an even record. Clovis West hasn’t had a winning record since the 2010 season. If the Golden Eagles can manage to win two games during the division 1 tournament, then they will finish the season with an overall winning record. But more importantly, Clovis West has a great chance of winning the upcoming division 1 tournament. The Golden Eagles are aggressive on offense and capable of racking up points against any team on any night.
