As April bursts upon the stage in Fresno, the magical energy of spring is in full evidence, especially in the Tower District, where Kathryn Barile’s The Brass Unicorn has been generating its own magical vibrations for nearly 40 years.
A repository for esoteric, mysterious wisdom traditions and healing modalities, the shop has been an invaluable resource to local seekers, healers, practitioners and students, providing books, education, and supplies for metaphysics, magic, alternative healing schools, and the occult.
Last summer, Kathryn moved her shop to a larger space (at 1007 N. Van Ness) that’s better able to accommodate workshops and events, such as this weekend’s Pranic Energy Healing Level 1, which she herself will be teaching.

This weekend’s course will cover the principles and practical applications of Energetic Anatomy (the art of working with energy centers that correspond to bodily organs) and will equip participants with techniques for self-healing and healing others. Based on the systems popularized by Master Choa Kok Sui, Kathryn’s teacher, Pranic healing uses prana, or life energy, to promote healing and the removal of negative energy.
“Pranic healing is awesome,” Kathryn says. “Energy is the missing key to so many things in life.” She met Master Choa at a conference in the early 2000s and was instantly impressed by his teaching and by seeing him in action.
“Pranic healing was Master’s magical thesis. It was what his ancestors’ gave; it was his great work, and it spread all over the world and very fast.” Having compiled and simplified ancient traditions of energy work, Master Choa created a system that was accessible to anyone, and potentially of service to everyone.
“The system that he put together is brilliant because…there’s two wings of pranic healing: there’s the esoteric part of pranic healing, which is the spiritual development. And on the other side, there’s the healing side. The healing side is the service side. You do service so you can have spiritual development in a safe way because you have some place to put that extra energy that you are generating, that you are creating yourself.”

Pranic healing also focuses on cleansing the practitioner of the negative energy that can get stirred up during this work; it also encourages practitioners to work on purifying their own characters.
“You’re becoming an Arhatic yogi, so you’re becoming empowered. You have to do something with that energy; if you don’t do something with that energy, you deteriorate. Spiritual energy comes down into the body, and it is like fertilizer. It grows everything in the garden. That’s why you have to do purification, purification, purification.”

The Pranic Energy Healing Level 1 course will be offered on Saturday, April 7, and Sunday, April 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Call (559) 441-7107 to take advantage of the $300 early bird registration; course fee is $350 at the door.
