While I am not a native Fresnan, I am pretty close. My mom & I moved to Fresno right before I turned 5 so she could go to Fresno State. Then love hit my mom’s life & she married a local so we stayed! The only time I left the area was for about 2 years in the early 2000’s. That said . . . I have never lived further east than Cedar.
My childhood home was Clovis. When I first got married we lived by Fresno State. And when we moved back we started by the airport & then moved out to Sunnyside. While not all in 1 city, all east.
I was raised pretty much solely in Clovis as a kid (never past Gettysburg & Blackstone) but as an adult I do things all over town. I feel Fresno is relatively small & there is so much to do! The Nutcracker downtown, Farmer’s Market at Manchester, my church at Cedar/Nees, the Dry Creek park in Clovis, . . . you get the idea.
So I didn’t think it was a big deal when we found a house just west of Fig Garden. But every time I am over there I just . . . well . . . Start trying to figure out my daily life. You know where to run & grab milk or the post office. The idea of living on the other side of town feels weird.
Yes, you may laugh at me now.
I know that technically Fig Garden (or Marks) isn’t exactly the West Side of Fresno but still. It is the other side of town to me. Yes, I know basically where things are. I am also conscious that I can’t find a Vons any closer than Cedar & Shepard (really?).
This has gotten a lot of laughter from both Jason (our own FresYes) & my husband Jeremy. Jeremy grew up over by 99 & Jason was in the Bullard area. They both chuckle as they point out that Blackstone & Shaw is the center of Fresno. And that made me think.
We all have our center of town. Mine was Fresno State. I grew up on campus, did high school programs on campus & lived 1 mile from the engineering building. Heck, I even met & dated my husband there. Even though I haven’t been on campus for years it is still the center to my fresno.
All that said. I am excited to discover a new center to my world in Fresno! I am looking forward to finding new favorites & new adventures.
So where is your center of Fresno? And why? Is it where you were raised? Is it the first place you lived when you relocated to Fresno? Is it where you worked or went to school? Where is that anchor in Fresno for you?
