'Sound the Alarm, Save a Life' this Saturday in Fresno

The American Red Cross of the Central Valley is asking the community to help “Sound the Alarm. Save a Life.” on Saturday, April 28, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Fresno Fire Department, 911 H Street in Fresno.

The Red Cross, along with the Fresno Fire Department and multiple community organizations, will be installing free smoke alarms in Fresno homes while educating families on the importance of home fire safety.

“Seven times a day, someone in this country dies in a home fire,” says Red Cross Executive Director Barry Falke. “In many cases, these tragedies can be prevented with a working smoke alarm. That’s why we’re partnering with the Fresno Fire Department to save lives in our own community.”

Sound the Alarm is part of the ongoing Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, in which Red Cross volunteers and partners canvass high-risk neighborhoods to install free smoke alarms and provide education on home fire safety. In the Central Valley, the Red Cross helped over 470 local families affected by home fires last year. This work was done thanks to nearly 780 volunteers in the six-county chapter.

The American Red Cross of the Central Valley hopes to recruit 200 volunteers from around the community and install 600 smoke alarms at Saturday’s event.

Relaxed in its calm breezes, listened with my dad to the crack of the bat at little league baseball games when I was a kid and now take my son to do the same at minor league games. I broadened my mind at its schools (I went to high school right here at San Joaquin Memorial, and to college at Fresno State!) I love that if I drive for two hours in one direction, I can be in the mountains. For two hours in another, luxuriating on a California beach. I can enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere of San Francisco or Los Angeles, but still be able to come home to relaxation, calm, and quiet.
