Just what is it about coffee? The comfort of that sweet smell first thing in the morning, the excuse to use cream and sugar, or even the health benefits list that grows longer every year – I’m a believer of all of the above. And when you move to a city where you actually have seasons and the weather gets cold, coffee is sometimes my only pick-me-up on a chilly fall or winter day.
There is a fairly good selection of coffeehouses in the Central Valley – Cafe Van Ness, Kuppa Joy, Cafe Corazon are among my local-lovin’ favorites. But on those days that I can’t get out of my pj’s quite yet, and a drive-thru is calling my name, I’ll give you one guess where I go: Dutch Bros. Coffee.
Now, I know I’m not alone on this front. The whole reason why I discovered this drive-thru dream was because all of my Fresno friends were posting about Dutch Bros. on social media all day, erryday. It’s kinda a big deal in Fresno. The quick service, the blasting music and happy baristas, and the delish coffee (and real fruit smoothies for my offspring) make it worth the drive across town.
But when I learned a little more about Dutch Bros. as a company, I fell even more in love…
“Here at Dutch Bros., we’re all about being positive and lovin’ life” states the website. The Optimist’s Creed, which the company has adopted and now calls the Dutch Creed is all about striving to pass good vibes onto their employees and then to the caffeine-craving customers as a result. It really does start from the top-down, too: in 2011, the company donated more than $1 million to food banks and various nonprofit organizations across the U.S. “Dutch Bros. Coffee has always focused more on people than the bottom line.” I can get behind that, with an iced coffee in my hand!

Something else you might adore about Dutch Bros. Coffee, is that franchises are locally owned and operated, so when you send your business their way, you as a customer are making an investment in your community. Let’s hear it for local!
This Oregon-founded coffee company got its start in 1992 – which figures, since a lot of good things happened in the 90’s, am I right? Dairy farmer duo, Dane and Travis Boersma (also brothers), started small, by pushing an espresso cart around the tiny town of Grants Pass, Oregon. Now 20 years and nearly 200 locations later, Dutch Bros. Coffee is the country’s largest privately held, drive-thru coffee company.
So where can you grab a cup of joe from this happy-go-lucky land of good vibes? Dutch Bros. Coffee has locations in Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Colorado and Arizona. There are three lovely little locations in Fresno (although I’m now going to petition for one in Clovis, thankyouverymuch):
