I have a mad crush on stories where a passion or a hobby becomes a career. I guess that’s probably in part because that’s what happened to me with my own freelance writing and fashion blogging.
But the road from passion to career doesn’t come without a lot of hard work. This is something that Luci Garcia knows all about. Garcia is the sweet and stylish owner of Flower Child Boutique in North Fresno. One of the newest boutiques on the scene in our city (located on Palm & Nees in Park Place), Garcia opened her hip doors last year. Just under one year later, her business is booming and she is doing what she loves most.
Luci Garcia has had big dreams and a crazy love for fashion since she was just a little girl, born and raised in Fresno. This local girl had a particular eye for runway fashion–the sleek runways, mysterious models, and designer’s creations intrigued her in a huge way. When her goal to study fashion design after high school didn’t quite work out, she took to the retail world–Hollister, Mainland, and Harley-Davidson of Fresno, to name a few.
After years in retail sales, Garcia had to make a change. She had to give that little girl dream a big dose of reality, and go back to college. While studying Business at Fresno State she revisited her passion for fashion, and changed her major to Fashion Merchandising and Consumer Science, with an emphasis on Fashion Merchandising. By May 2014, Garcia graduated, and months later, her dream swung open, along with the doors of Flower Child Boutique, in February 2015.
The name for the storefront shop comes from Garcia’s obsession with 1960s counter-culture, so its actually more personal than literal. As soon as you walk into this bright little fashion spot, feast your eyes on lace, denim, vintage graphic band tees, slip dresses, floral and tribal prints, and basically everything that is on-trend NOW.
Garcia even gave us the inside scoop: the best new brand in her boutique is Trunk Ltd. This rock & roll-inspired brand has a vintage vibe, with a luxury spin (the shirts are quality handmade and pair perfectly with big rockstar gems and bangles!). Each tee in this line that Flower Child Boutique carries is artist-authorized, so the band you flaunt has seen it!
“Flower Child is about being an individual and expressive,” Garcia says. And boy does it show in the clothes she buys and stocks in her store. Popular, big-name brands like Free People, Peace Love World, BB Dakota, and JACK stock the shelves and racks here. Boho chic accessories, purses, clutches, even home decor and beauty must-haves also have their place in store.
When I asked Garcia a little about her own, personal flower child style, she told me, “If I could take over any celeb’s closet it would be Gwen Stefani’s closet! Her style is eclectic, vibrant, and versatile. Also, my favorite item in my closet is a black military inspired jacket by Ralph Lauren–one of Jimi Hendrix’s signature styles.”
