Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you have heard the news that Beyoncé is pregnant with twins. You and I probably won’t be invited to that baby shower, which is fine since Beyoncé and Jay Z don’t need either of us to give their children gifts.
But there are expectant families here in the 559 who could use some help providing for their babies. Thus, in the name of Beyoncé, one local woman wants the Fresno/Clovis community to come together to collect 55,900 diapers for charity. (That magic number coming from our area code — get it?)
The Beyby Shower diaper drive and benefit will take place Sunday, May 28, from 2-4 p.m. at Vintage Rose, 437 E. Olive Ave. in Fresno.
The shower was created by Desirae Washington-Reed, co-owner of Take 3, a family-owned burger joint on Fresno’s Fulton Mall.
This is not Washington-Reed’s first event. She was also part of the team that organized the Breakfast Tribute to Notorious B.I.G. in March. And she knows first-hand what it takes to care for babies.
“Being a mom of two little ones, I know that diapers are one of the biggest expenses for new parents,” she says. “The idea that we will be able to lighten that burden for some families in need is the driving force behind this event. And Beyoncé. Of course Beyoncé.”
Diapers gathered will be given to The Pregnancy Care Center, a non-profit serving the Fresno area since 1984. Its mission is to provide free medical services for women and families experiencing an unexpected pregnancy.
The goal is to collect $15,000 worth of diapers, or 55,900 diapers as stated above. Organizers and sponsors of the event, including a group of community organizations, young professionals, and small-business owners such as HashtagiDo and Kay Rich Cares, say that number of diapers will help thousands of mothers-to-be in the Fresno area.
The Beyby Shower will include refreshments, vendors, games, music (a Beyoncé mix, naturally), and a raffle. Anybody who donates diapers will receive a raffle ticket that could be good for prizes worth thousands of dollars.
If you want to help out but can’t attend the event, you’ll be able to drop off diapers at a number of local business in the week leading up to the event — including Take 3, which will offer discounts in exchange for donations.
