Israel Serrano is living the “wheelchair life” in Fresno. Or, in social media speak, he’s #LivinWheelchairLife. Paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident when he was just a baby, the 20-year-old uses Instagram to share his story and the stories of other people with disabilities. All the while using that hashtag that let’s people know life in a wheelchair is definitely worth living.
What is the wheelchair life all about? For Serrano, it’s pretty much like that of any other guy his age. In fact, it was trying to fit in with the cool crowd while attending Sunnyside High School, that actually allowed Serrano to come to terms with his disability and be himself. Serrano says nothing really holds him back these days. When two wheels aren’t enough, Serrano trades them in for four. Those four wheels belonging to his very own car, which he drives on his own using hand controls.
His wheelchair even allows him to stand, which came in handy when he took his girlfriend of three years to prom recently.
But, while he may consider himself just an average guy, his outreach to other people with disabilities sets him apart. A quick scroll through his Instagram account gives a glimpse of Serrano’s passion for connecting with the disabled. And his passion for sharing their stories.
Here, he talks about the accident that shaped his life, the special bond he shares with his sister who has Down syndrome, and his passion for reaching out to others like himself — and sharing their stories with his more than 12,000 followers.
