Judging by the packed fields around town every Saturday, soccer is a pretty popular sport in the FresYes area. Often I’ve driven by a field and thought, “Man, that looks like fun!”
But sometimes when you’re a bit, older, it can be hard to get started in a new activity, especially if you don’t know where to head for information. Therefore, I’ve taken it upon myself to help if you’re in the over-30 crowd and interested in adding soccer to your list of spring activities (which you should—reasons below).
My personal credentials are slim, but I know people who play. In fact, I’m married to a guy who plays soccer AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. This makes me an expert by proxy.
There are a lot of soccer leagues in town, so the options are plentiful. Often divided by age and ability, it’s possible to play in soccer clubs from the age of five to 55.
However, if you’re looking for an over-30, co-ed league, the Madera United Soccer League might be for you. Games are played at Liberty High School in the Madera Ranchos every Saturday.
If you are over thirty, this is a great way to make some friends and get your fitness on. Even if you are allergic to running like I am, it’s still fun to watch the games. Just pack a picnic blanket and some shades and you’ve got free entertainment and a suntan!
When asking members of the Rekickulous team what they like most about playing I discovered that people are usually there for the workout. Of course, friendships built on the field also play a part in people returning to soccer season after season. Team member Lacy Fullmer says she signed on for the exercise and to spend quality time with her husband and Team Captain, Jared. Jared says he plays for lots of reasons, but especially to make his son (who’s a soccer fan) proud.
Basically, it’s a great way to get fit and impress the people you love.
The Madera United Soccer League is open to players of all skill levels, so even if you haven’t kicked a soccer ball since second grade, you can sign up and polish up those skills while burning calories and making friends.
Costs vary from team to team. Some teams are well established and have a core group of players every season. Some players stick with the same team every season, while some players move from team to team. Teams like Rekickulous are new to the scene, but that doesn’t stop them from having cool jerseys.
If you’re over thirty and interested in joining the Spring League:
The Winter League is currently still playing, but Spring League sign-ups begin in April.
