When you think of a concert being hosted in someone’s house, what image comes to mind? A high school garage band? A frat party? OK, those are probably stereotypes. But I bet what you WOULDN’T imagine if I invited you to a concert in someone’s living room is an opportunity to see a Grammy-nominated band, right? That’s what makes this upcoming event so special. Long-time indie rock band The Choir is coming on June 10th – and playing a full show in a North Fresno living room.
The Choir will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of their beloved album “Circle Slide” by playing every song. And I’m not talking a stripped down version, either. It’s going to be full-on electric, although the night will also showcase a special acoustic set by a friend of the band, Michael Roe, featuring songs from a deluxe anniversary reissue of his band 77s “Pray Naked” album.
The Choir will also be playing songs from their latest project, “Shadow Weaver,” which was a crowd-funded project, speaking to the passion of the band’s fan base. (My favorite song is “What You Think I Am.” You can check it out here on YouTube.)
You might know The Choir and not even know it! They wrote the classic Christian worship song “God of Wonders.” Many contemporary Christian groups have drawn influence from them. Their music isn’t strictly Christian, though. The Nashville-based band writes about all aspects of life, although much of their music has spiritual influences.
This will be the fourth home concert The Choir has put on in Fresno. Longtime fan Bryan Frazier saw the first show several years ago and reached out to the band to see if they would be interested in having another. He hosted the second one, which I had the pleasure of attending. The success of the event drove the band to continue working with Frazier. The third concert was a Christmas celebration, and Frazier will now be hosting this fourth show.
Although The Choir still plays festivals, churches and clubs, Frazier said it’s becoming more and more common for smaller musical acts to play full shows in homes. He has had other bands contact him to see if he would be interested in hosting them. He likens the experience to the nostalgia of vinyl albums or taking you back to the grassroots movement of music.
Having been to one of these concerts, I can tell you that it’s an experience like no other. The 50-seat show is at once simple and yet the music is all-consuming. As one band member said, “How often do you get to see a Grammy-nominated band in such an intimate setting?” The band also sticks around after the show to mingle and talk with fans.
If you’re interested, tickets are still available for the Fresno show, taking place on June 10th at 7 p.m. They can be purchased online here. You can find out more about the band and listen to some of their songs on their website.
