Some of my favorite people in the world are bakers, librarians, babies, and comedians. Beginning to see a theme?
Whether it be in person, on TV, or even listening on the radio, stand-up comedy is such fun. Over the years I’ve been to many a comedy show. I’ve seen Jerry Seinfeld, George Lopez (twice), and a bunch of comedians from a radio show I listen to. I’ve also watched tons of stand-up specials on TV. Remember back in the day when VH1 use to show stand up? I LOVED it!
I’ve been to some great shows, and I’ve also been to some crummy shows. There is something about being part of an audience where the comedians kill it, and you laugh until your sides hurt. Then there is something about being part of an audience when the comedians bomb. Comedy is such a skill and art form that being there live is such an experience to have. So, anytime there is an opportunity to go to a comedy show, I do it!
This leads me to a local comedy event this Friday. As Fresno’s longest running monthly comedy series, Teazer World Tea Market will be hosting a Happy Birthday Roast for comedy host TK. Now, I’m usually not a fan of comedy roasts, but for a comedian it’s a way for other comedians to pay their respect to one another. It’s not meant to be mean spirited, it’s meant to be funny and full of love. And that’s exactly what the comedians of the night will do. They’ll make us all laugh, while sending love to TK.
TK is an important person for our local comedy scene. He has been known throughout Fresno as the Armenian Comic with so much to give. Many of his shows and performances are at free locations with no cover or ticket costs. He’s also well known for giving every new local comic their first real booking in a premier show. This is great because it raises the talent level for so many in the comedy industry. See, such great reasons to go out and celebrate TK’s special day!
If you’d like to go to the comedy show, it’s this Friday, August 21st. The headliner is from Los Angeles, and others are coming from as far away as Oregon. They’ve even scored a local award winning taco truck to sell food for this bash! (Special things happen when it’s your birthday!) The best part of this all? The show is FREE! Yes, you read that right-free. It’s held inside the Galleria Building, outside of Teazers. (2405 Capitol St, 93721) There are no tickets needed, just show up. The doors open at 7, but show starts at 8. If you want to reserve a table, you can call 559-470-3306. Oh, and did I mention that this is family friendly? I went to a show a couple of years ago, and I can vouch that there was no swearing or inappropriate jokes-and that takes skill!
Here’s to a night full of laughs! I hope to see some of you there!
