Since purchasing my FitBit Flex activity tracker, I’ve been very motivated to get and keep moving as much as possible. I love competing with friends for the most steps during a work week and watching my miles walked add up. I’ve walked 2,000 miles since getting my Flex, just under 15 months ago, which is half the length of the Great Wall of China according to my congratulatory email from FitBit. Pretty cool!
With the holidays coming up, I am continuing to look for ways to stay active, which I realize may be more important now than the rest of the year as I’ll likely indulge in a few holiday treats and find it harder to get outside and walk as the weather continues to cool down. That said, there’s a great opportunity coming up just around the corner for the whole family to be active and have fun together at the 14th Annual Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot, started originally by the owners of Sierra Running Company and held Thanksgiving morning, has grown to include a crowd of 2,000 Valley folks looking to burn off their Thanksgiving feast — in advance. This fun 5k run + 2 mile family walk/run event is held on the cross-country track at Woodward park and encourages families to get together and bring the largest group they can, because there’s a prize for that! That’s right – the largest participating family is a prize to be awarded at the event, as is “best costume” so if you join in on the fun, you may as well don your best pilgrim or turkey hat!

The 5k race will begin at 8am, and it is a chipped, timed race. The 2-mile run begins at 8:03 and the walk at 8:05am. Strollers are allowed on the 2-mile course, however dogs are not allowed on either course so leave Fluffy and Fido at home. (They’re still going to have a good day – you know there will be plenty of Thanksgiving leftovers for them, too.)

Online registration for the event is going on now, and you can snag the best price if you sign up TODAY, as registration is just $20. After today, registration will rise from $25 on up to $40 depending on how long you wait to commit. (Early turkey gets the worm?)
