I realize that with the start of school, summer might seem like it’s over, but technically we still have a good month left of warm weather. (Living in Fresno, we know we really have a couple months left of warm weather!) And what’s one treat to enjoy when it’s hot? Shaved ice!!

My kids love shaved ice. They also love snow cones, ice cream, frozen yogurt….I mean really, the list goes on. Since it’s still hot out, I like to treat the kids to a cool after school snack. This week we’ve had ice cream, slurpees and just yesterday we had shaved ice.
There is a little mobile place called Tropical Island Shaved Ice that sets up over by Lions Park. We go every once in a while, and all the times we’ve gone, Debbie (the owner) has been super nice. I really like talking with her. Yesterday she chatted with me about her daughter, my work, the children in the area, and just about life in general. She is respectful of the customers, and demands others around to show the same respect. She is the reason why I go back. It’s the small business owners of FresYes that helps to make this city a place I love.

If you’d ever like to get a treat from Tropical Island Shaved Ice here are some things you should know:
- They are parked in the west parking lot of Lions Park, off of Emerson and Marks.
- During the week they get there at about 2pm, and leave when the sun goes down. If there are games being held at the park, they’ll stay longer. They’re there most of the day on Saturday and Sunday.
- They sell other treats- corn nuts, candy, rice crispy treats, chips, and soda.
- They take the square.
- I would recommend going around 4 or 5, not right after school.
- Cost is
- $2 for a small
- $3 for a medium
- $4 for a large
Now for the flavors:
There are the typical flavors of bubble gum, cotton candy, vanilla, root beer, banana, pineapple, peach and Tiger’s Blood. (What the heck flavor is that anyway? I always ask, and always forget.) But there are also other flavors such as green apple, apricot, dreamsicle, Bahama Mama, pink lemonade, diablito, tamarindo, and sugar free watermelon. (My daughter loves that they put on lots of syrup. She even said, “I appreciate all the syrup they put on. Most places don’t.”)

I know you can get shaved ice, snow cones, or any other cool treat at various places around town, but I like going here because of Debbie. For me it’s always about the people, the connections, and the wonderful relationships I can make with other locals who love our city.
*Tropical Island will also do parties and other events. (You know you want shaved ice at your next birthday party!) Just give Debbie a call at 559-289-9243
