Ok, that last historical post about the USS Fresno was sure a lot of fun!
This week we found a full tv episode that documents the founding of Fresno starting with Leland Stanford and the Railroad all the way up to 1966!
It’s a full 25 minutes long but here’s some details and highlights we liked:
They show downtown Fresno circa 1966, mostly J Street (later to become Fulton) (at :45 sec).
Nearly 160,000 people! (at 1:40) . Can you imagine?
Leland Stanford (at 3:05) and the railroad.
On March 23,1874 (at 4:50) they hold an election –after whiskey– and Fresno becomes the County Seat.
1890 Edwin M Eaton lived in a home that later became Hardy’s Theater (at 8:43).
Barton Opera House “Fresno had become a rather sizeable community, but no opera house of major theatrical potential had been built. Robert G. Barton, Sr., sought to change that condition when he decided to build an opera house in Fresno. Barton succeeded in building an opera house beyond the expectations of most people.” (14:30) This was on the corner of Mariposa and Broadway!
The first building with an elevator! This is the Bank and Trust Company of Central California (18:02).
This became the Security Bank Building, which then became the Pacific Southwest Building (18:50).
The Roos Atkins Building (22:30)
Hey! We Just found the book they show online!
