I feel like there’s pretty much no such thing as a bad cupcake. But there are also really, really, really GOOD cupcakes. And I think some of the best cupcakes in town come from Frosted Cakery in the Tower District. Not only do their cupcakes and desserts taste amazing, but they are some of the most creative bakers in the Valley.
For example, during a recent tour of the bakery with owner Beverly Gable, she showed me a tray of tiny Jason masks from the famed horror movie, which they were putting on cupcakes that day. I was slightly confused, since Halloween had long since passed. Then I realized what day it was. It was Friday the 13th!
Frosted Cakery will literally make themed cupcakes to celebrate a random, single day like Friday the 13th. Which, by the way, my favorite day to visit them is April Fool’s Day, for their Spam cupcake. Don’t knock it ‘till you try it!
All of this creativity is a group effort for the Frosted Cakery team. The employees meet around a table in the bakery every Tuesday morning to discuss ideas for the upcoming weeks. Beverly says everybody has input into their recipes and flavors.

“I try not to watch ‘Cupcake Wars’ … ‘cause I want to go where we want to go, not just like, ‘Oh I heard somebody else’s idea,’ ” Beverly said.
In addition to being a team effort, it’s truly a family affair at Frosted Cakery. Beverly learned how to bake and decorate cakes at her family’s bakery down the street when she was young. Six years ago, she started Frosted Cakery with her daughter. Now, they have several mother/child pairs who work for them.
And they are so much more than just a cupcake shop. Frosted’s signature small confections were born when the popularity of cupcakes took off, but the business actually started out with wedding cakes, and the bakery is still creating the most amazing wedding, birthday and other celebration cakes you can imagine. It seems if you can dream it, Frosted Cakery can do it. While I was at their bakery, I saw cakes in progress with everything from gold leaf buttercream frosting to a peacock painted on fondant.
A quick perusal through their website and Facebook also showed the many facets of their talents. Need an R2D2 cake to celebrate the new “Star Wars” movie? They can do that. Mickey Mickey themed wedding cake? They can do that, too! And don’t even get me started on the adorableness of this baby shower creation.
Frosted Cakery will be bringing all of this and more into the holiday season. Head to their bakery all this week for Thanksgiving-themed cakes and desserts. They’ll have signature cakes for purchase, including an adorable turkey and a cake that looks like it has “Give Thanks” written on chalkboard. Special cupcake flavors include candied yam, caramel apple spice and pumpkin spice. Other mini desserts include pumpkin cannolis and cookies decorated to look like drumsticks and pie slices. And speaking of pie, new for this season are four flavors of pie in mini and full-size: pumpkin with a mascarpone crumb, caramel apple crumb, peach lattice and bourbon pecan (which I tried and am obsessed with).
Christmas will bring with it a whole other crop of deliciousness, including chocolate peppermint bark and vanilla bean dream cupcakes. Additionally, you still have time to custom order a cake for a holiday party, whether it’s one of Frosted Cakery’s signature cakes or one you create with them. The shop likes cakes to be ordered at least two weeks in advance. You can check out their website and Facebook for more information on their hours and how to contact them.
Other than for the love of sweets, why does the team at Frosted Cakery put in this much work? Because of the relationships they form with their customers.
“One thing that’s really wonderful about doing weddings is that we get to meet people at their special day and then we want to keep that relationship,” Beverly said. “One of the customers that just came in and ordered her cake, we’re doing her daughter’s 7th birthday and we’ve done all of them. And that’s so exciting. And we have brides now that have come in and we’re doing their kid’s birthday. So it’s fun. And we never want to lose that connection because it’s like … it’s friends.”
