It’s a new year, which means there are new places to explore around Fresno!
Last week Mr. FresYes himself posted a picture on Instagram of some yummy looking donuts from a new local donut store in town.
I did a little research, and I realized that this new place, Donut Fantasy, is actually located in my neck of the woods!! Most new, and cool places are usually located in Tower or Riverpark. Hardly ever is there anything new on my side of town. This means I needed to head out and try a donut myself.
My daughter and I headed out on a beautiful Saturday morning. When we got there, we were the only ones there. Then, before we knew it, the place was packed! I was surprised at how quickly it filled up! The employees working the front counter were super nice and friendly. The gentleman joked with me, while one of the ladies gave me suggestions. They were very, very helpful in answering all of my questions. I later found out that they were the parents and a family friend of the owners, Nick and Ashley Hamby.
Nick and Ashley are a husband and wife team, who wanted to open the first gourmet donut shop in Fresno. They took inspiration from the popular Oregon based, Voodoo Doughnut. They liked their concept and wanted to recreate it in Fresno. So, with Nick having a baking and pastry background, and with Ashley bringing her customer service expertise to the table, they knew that they could make an awesome business. They are a perfect balance, and learn from each other every day. Nick does all the baking, but recruits Ashley to do some of the decorating from time to time. Then on occasion, Nick gets to help Ashley in the front as well. It’s the duo who does it all!
Now, I know that this may seem like a funny post to be writing, since many people are focused on being healthy this time of year. However, not everyone is dieting right now. And, even if everyone were dieting, it’s okay to splurge now and again. Sooooo…In the spirit of indulging, let’s take a look at some of what Donut Fantasy has to offer.
My daughter settled on these two.
I know that Hot Cheetos are bad for kids, but my daughter wanted to try this donut. Guess what? She really liked it!
Now don’t worry, if you don’t like speciality donuts, they have “normal” donuts available as well. They have maple, chocolate, and glazed donuts. Some kids may like those better, and if you’re going with the whole family, there needs to be something for everyone. (It’s like my son-his favorite ice cream is vanilla. No matter where we go, he always gets vanilla.)
Donut Fantasy may be a gourmet donut store, but to me it was more than that. Nick and Ashley have created a family oriented atmosphere. The family and friend who were working the front of the shop that morning were friendly and kind. Everyone who came in while we were there were having fun, and had smiles on their faces. One couple and their child enjoyed their donuts inside while happily chatting away. As my daughter and I were leaving, some other customers entered, laughing and having a good time. It was like a small little community was forming. A community that loves donuts. I like that community. 😉
As you all know, I love to support local new businesses. Will you join me in supporting this one? Donut Fantasy has only been open for a couple of weeks, and let’s help them to keep their momentum going! Their hours are Monday-Saturday, 6am-6pm. During their last hour open (or while supplies last), they also have donut happy hour, where all donuts are half off. Uh, yes please! (Regular donut prices range from $1-$3.)
Donut Fantasy is located at 1731 W Bullard Ave, #111, Fresno. It’s on the south/east corner of Bullard and West.
Check here for a full list (with pictures) of their menu.
You can also find them on Facebook to get all the latest.
I encourage you to try Donut Fantasy. While you’re there, make some new friends with the owners or other customers. It truly is a fun environment, and I know they’ll enjoy chatting with you.
