I kind of feel like starting this blog with, “OMG IT’S SO DELICIOUS GO THERE NOW!” And then I want to try to figure out how I didn’t know about House of JuJu for over a year, and who I can yell at about that.
I guess I’m not as up on the local food scene as I thought. Although House of JuJu is kind of a hidden gem, tucked away in the back of the breezeway at the Dewitt Building in Old Town Clovis. I discovered it a couple months ago while I was checking out neighboring store Revival 23.
The menu at family-owned House of JuJu is deceptively simple: two pages of burgers, salads, flatbreads, hot dogs. But it’s actually sort of “choose your own adventure.” (And we all know I love endless choices. See: my obsession with the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine.)
Everything basically starts with signature sauces like kalamata olive, creamy bleu cheese, chipotle cilantro and spicy garlic. Get the spicy garlic. Trust me. I tried to figure out the secret to this ridiculously addicting aioli. All my server would cop to is that it contains hoisin sauce. (A sweet and salty staple in Chinese households, but otherwise pretty much unknown on these shores.) Hoisin sauce?! Mind blown. Get the spicy garlic with the potatoes. Do it.
The burgers have fabulously fun names like JuJu Bleu, Calamity Jane and Dragon Lady, and each features one of the sauces. But then you can customize it with angus beef, ground turkey, grilled chicken, portabella mushroom or bison. Yes, bison. And if you’re like me and can spend hours staring at a menu without deciding what you want, House of JuJu is here to help you. You don’t have to choose. You can get three different burgers of your choice in a slider meal. Teeny, adorable versions of the restaurant’s favorites. And it doesn’t stop there. Gluten-free? Trying to watch your weight? Get your burger in a salad bowl!
Speaking of salads, you can get four different kinds, each featuring dressing made with one of the sauces. Then you can add chicken, steak or shrimp for a few extra dollars. Oh, is that not enough yet? You can also wrap the whole thing up in a tortilla to make it hand-held!
Then you’ve got the most customizable item on the menu: the flatbread. Start with the flatbread and mozzarella (I’m pretty surprised we don’t have at least a dozen cheese choices actually, haha). Then add toppings galore.
Finally, there’s the hot dogs. House of JuJu, I’m kind of disappointed in you. Only three types of hot dogs?! (I’m totally kidding. I’m sure they’re delicious. And I haven’t tested this yet, but I’m willing to bet they would probably let you add all of the sauces and all of the toppings if you wanted to.)
Anyway, I’m totally hungry now. And I hope you are, too. Head over to House of JuJu’s and tell them FresYes sent you!
P.S. If you know anyone on the Central Coast, let them know there’s a House of JuJu in Morro Bay, too!
