The Good News is that it looks like we’ll be staying in the double digits this weekend. There’s no bad news. That’s it. LOL!
Did you happen to see our Emergency Listing Broadcast Service go out yesterday? That’s because our local MLS is down, along with many others across the United States. They were all brought down by a cyber / ransomware attack almost 10 days ago! That means that if you are home shopping, nothing you see online is current! Not here, not on Zillow, not anywhere. Can you imagine that?
Agents don’t know what is still for sale, what’s under contract, what has had a price reduction, or even what is newly listed. While this is only temporary, we asked all the agents in the area if they had any new listings they would like to share. If there is a listing that you might like to see – let your agent know by sending them the link. From there they can contact the listing agent and get all the information you need.
In past weeks we’ve tossed out little tidbits about the Sun, the Moon and you’ve said you like learning new things. Today let’s switch to Spirits. It’s too early for Halloween, but there’s no season for the Fresno Nightcrawler, right?
No, not those kind of spirits, let’s talk Tequila!
In light of Pee Wee Herman‘s passing, we somehow gravitated to this subject. If you are one of those that appreciates a good margarita (or a shot) from time to time you might have heard tequila and mezcal and wondered what the difference is.
Both tequila and mezcal are made from a plant called Agave. Technically, tequila is a mezcal. The distinguishing factor is that mezcal can be produced from up to 50 species of the agave plant, Tequila can be made from just one, the “Agave Tequilana Weber”, or “Weber Blue Agave”.
So, all tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila. Make’s sense, right?

To add a little more difference, tequila is steamed in ovens, while the plant is often roasted in underground pits for mezcal.
Tequila comes in a few forms. Silver or Blanco means that the spirit has not been aged in a barrel. While Añejo tequilas will have aged in barrels for more than a year. In the middle you’ll find Reposados, which have been aged in barrels for more than 2 months. What is better? That all depends on what you are doing with it.
To be called mezcal, the spirit must be made in one of nine Mexican states: Durango, Guerrero, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. Tequila on the other hand, has to be distilled in on eof five authorized tequila states in Mexico: Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, or Tamaulipas.
Overwhelmed yet?
Ok, so here’s maybe the coolest thing you’ll learn today. On the back of the tequila bottle is a small little number. It’s labeled as NOM. That stands for (Norma Oficial Mexicana) and is a four-digit numerical code printed on the back of every bottle that signifies a distillery.
While there are over 3,000 brands on the market, there are fewer than 200 distilleries. That means that a single distillery might be making a bunch of your favorite brands as well as a bunch of brands you don’t like. Certain NOMs are linked to numerous tequila brands, possibly suggesting a lesser quality product, as these large-scale distilleries are frequently recognized for incorporating additives in their products. This is done to establish noticeable flavor distinctions among the various brands they manufacture. Conversely, smaller, family-owned distilleries tend to feature their own distinct NOM, reflecting their individuality.
Ok, here’s the cool part. You can enter the NOM into THIS SITE and find out so much more than the label suggests. We did a little digging and found that Sammy Hagar has his uber high end tequila distilled in the same NOM as Costco!
