Taco Truck Throwdown & Mexican Baseball Fiesta
At this point, the Fresno Grizzlies have become synonymous with tacos. To the point where the Fresno Grizzlies literally become the Fresno Tacos for every Tuesday night game! So it should come as no surprise that Taco Truck Throwdown 6, happening August 18th, will be bigger and better than ever.
If you’re not familiar with Taco Truck Throwdown, it’s an annual event hosted by the Grizzlies that pits local taco trucks against each other. There is traditionally both a Judge’s Award and a People’s Choice Award given out. This year, the People’s Choice Award has been renamed the Adrian Loza Memorial People’s Choice Award after Adrian Loza of the El Premio Mayor truck, a two-time Throwdown winner. Adrian tragically died just before his 30th birthday this year.
This year, an all-time high of more than 30 trucks will be participating in the Throwdown. The event will extend onto H Street in front of the Chukchansi Park box office in order to accommodate all of the participants and crowds.
Taco Truck Throwdown is expected to sell out as always, so get your tickets early! There are special discount packages for tickets plus taco vouchers as well. Vouchers are available separately for $2.50 each, and can already be purchased at the Grizzlies box office. You should definitely get your vouchers for tacos early, so you’ll be ready to go as soon as you enter. Gates open at 5:05 p.m. for all fans, and my advice is that you get there well before game time for a shorter wait and the ability to enjoy some tacos and not miss any of the game, which begins at 7:05 p.m.!
You should also prep for the event by getting all your Taco Truck Throwdown gear now. Building on the (literally) international success of the taco hat, the Grizzlies have created a whole slate of awesome Fresno Tacos merchandise. There’s a great new cap featuring an actual taco truck, and in addition to new, redesigned Tacos hats and uniforms, you can now represent your favorite kind of taco with what gear you choose to wear. Are you Team Lengua, Team Carnitas, Team Asada or Team Al Pastor? Plus, your little ones can be outfitted in shirts featuring the adorable Cilantro Gomez, the new Fresno Tacos mascot, who will officially be introduced at the Throwdown. You can see and buy all of the gear at the new website tacosbaseball.com now.
Taco Truck Throwdown isn’t the only way the Grizzlies are honoring the Valley’s rich Mexican heritage. The team, in partnership with the Consulate of Mexico, just announced that Chukchansi Park will be one of the hosts of this year’s Mexican Baseball Fiesta.
“The Mexican-American community is such an integral part of our fan base in Fresno, that we couldn’t pass up this opportunity to extend the baseball season two extra days,” said Fresno Grizzlies General Manager Derek Franks in a press conference. “The atmosphere for games in the Mexican Pacific League is over the top fun and highly charged, so we think Grizzlies fans and all baseball fans in the Central Valley will appreciate seeing the game they love in authentic Mexican style. It truly is a party; live music during the games and even mascots on the field while play is going on. We all miss the season when it’s gone, so why not extend it one more weekend in Fresno?”
The festivities will begin at Chukchansi Park on September 15th, with the Consul of Mexico celebrating Mexican Independence Day (which is September 16th). Then two exhibition games will take place on Saturday, September 17th, and Sunday, September 18th, between two teams from the Mexican Pacific League: Naranjeros de Hermosillo and Aguilas de Mexicali. Naranjeros de Hermosillo is historically the most successful team in the Mexican Pacific League. Former players on the team include Curt Schilling, Larry Walker and Fernando Valenzuela. Former players for Aguilas de Mexicali include Mike Piazza and John Kruk.
Tickets for the Mexican Baseball Fiesta start at $10 and are available now at the Grizzlies box office and at the Fresno Grizzlies website. More information on both events is available on the Grizzlies website, Instagram and Facebook pages. The Grizzlies are still in the hunt for a playoff spot, so go on out to cheer them on!
