Its name may conjure Arthurian legend, but Sanger-based brewery House of Pendragon has been busy crafting a tale all its own over the past few years.
Tommy Caprelian started House of Pendragon three years ago with his wife, Nora, after several years brewing at home and later working for Tioga Sequoia. Since then, the business has grown to include a tap room in Clovis, a partnership with Pita Kabob & Grill to open a gastropub in downtown Fresno, and an expanded brewing operation in Sanger.
Although Caprelian says House of Pendragon (an acronym Caprelian insists was a complete accident — see video below) is still a “baby” brewery, as brewmaster he’s putting in 12-hour days, seven days a week to keep up with demand. And while a bottling operation is still a ways off, HoP beer can be enjoyed on tap at its Clovis tasting room and several other Valley businesses, including BC’s Pizza & Beer, Spokeasy Public House, Kunisama, Peeve’s Public House and Michaelangelo’s Pizzeria.
King Arthur’s story may be more fable than fact, but HoP’s story is all real, and the product of hard work on the part of the Caprelians. And it’s only the beginning. Here are some things to look forward to if you like craft beer, haven’t yet tried HoP’s brews, or are a dedicated soldier in the Pendragon army:
“Game of Thrones” season 6 premiere one-off beers: In celebration of the HBO show’s sixth season (which premieres Sunday, April 24), HoP will release a beer a day starting the Thursday before. Each beer will be named for a dragon on the show, keeping in line with the brewery’s theme. On Sunday, customers (and GoT fans) can pick up growlers of beer to enjoy in front of the T.V. that night.
Sour beer: Caprelian says his customers have been waiting for a sour beer for a long time. And a HoP tart saison is almost ready. Right now it’s just a matter of waiting until it’s just right. “For something they’ve been looking forward to for two years, I don’t want them to be disappointed when it comes out,” Caprelian said.
Beer & Brats: HoP has partnered with the Valley Animal Shelter for the no-kill shelter’s annual Beer & Brats fundraiser. Happening TONIGHT, the event is a perfect opportunity to try HoP beer while supporting a good cause. This is the second year the brewery has participated in the event.
