I’ve lived in Fresno for most of my life (with the exception of a handful of years in Northern and then Southern California). When Vallarta Supermarkets first came to Fresno I never really had the desire to see what it was all about.
I heard about Vallarta from a friend, about 7 or so years ago. She told me she loved getting her fruit and veggies there. She said it was cheap. I saw the ads in the paper, but still didn’t have the desire to drive to that part of town. I’m of the mindset that I don’t want to drive half way across town to save 20 cents, especially when gas is as high as it is. (Even though back then gas was at the bargain price of $3 a gallon.) Anyway, it wasn’t until almost 2 years ago when I was introduced to the wonderfulness of Vallarta. Back then I was dating this gentleman who loved to shop at Vallarta.
One of the stores was close to his home, and he went there often. One night he brought me dinner from there. I was under the impression he was going to get the all the fixins, and make me dinner. But no, he brought a fully cooked meal over. What?! We had freshly made tortillas (and they were warm), carne asada, salsa, rice and beans. I was pleasantly surprised. As time went on, my gentleman friend started to bring me steak from Vallarta. It was tender and very yummy.
Fast forward to January of this year. My new job took me to the areas of Butler and Maple. I took this as an opportunity to go and visit Vallarta Supermarket myself. I originally went in just to get lunch, which I did, but I also took some time to wander around.

The Taqueria area. You can get a hot meal to take home or eat there. You can also get all the meat, cooked, a la carte, to take home and make it how you like.
Make sure you leave enough room for dessert!
I’ve purchased a cake from here once, and my grandparents really liked it.
They have lots and lots of yummy things!
Some other items they carry include: Pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread), meats (marinated pork and beef), specialty meats that I don’t eat (tripe, beef feet and tripitas-which are animal intestines), lots of seafood and desserts (which I do eat). But my favorite? The horchata (rice milk). It is sooooo sweet and creamy.
Vallarta Supermarket is a Mexican specialty supermarket. It first opened in 1985, down in Southern California. They’ve since grown all over the state, mostly in Southern California and here in the Valley. Vallarta gives a lot to charity as well, which encourages me to shop there more.
There are 2 locations here in Fresno, with a 3rd location scheduled to open next year sometime. One is located at 4831 E Butler Ave Fresno, CA 93727. The other Vallarta is located at 3850 N Cedar Ave Fresno, CA 93726. The new location will be closer to me (Clinton and Weber), so I’m super excited!
If you decide to go and visit, let me know what you love best about the place. Do you have a favorite meal? A favorite dessert? How about a recipe you’d like to share? Perhaps you have a suggestion on something I should try. Like I said, let me know, and I’ll give it a whirl! I’m always up to exploring new things! 😉
