I have dogs on the brain lately. It’s no surprise, since I accidentally started a dog-sitting business. (It’s a long story, but suffice to say, once people know you’re willing to do it, things snowball.)
I’ve always loved animals, but I have learned a lot more about pampering canines in the past few months. Like, there are a lot of cute outfits for dogs, especially to keep them warm in the winter or dress them for the big game. So…you guessed it! This post is all about doggie fashion!
The temptation with dogs is the same as it is with humans: head to the nearest big box store (in this case, Petsmart or Petco) for the biggest selection at the cheapest price. That’s why I’m here. I did some shopping around for you at locally-owned pet stores, and came up with two favorites!
If you’re looking for something with a bit of a big-box feel and a bigger selection, then Whitie’s Pets on Blackstone is the place to go. Not only do they have a huge selection of adorable clothing for dogs, but they also carry pretty much everything you’d find at Petsmart, including fish, small pets and all the supplies you need.
There’s nothing that says “shop local” more than the teeny tiny Fresno State Bulldogs jerseys and sweatshirts carried by Whitie’s. They also have theme sports jerseys for the Raiders, Niners and A’s. But it’s not all sports. They have all kinds of things, from Hawaiian shirts to a delicate, lacy dress that makes me wonder how it could go on any dog without ripping. (Who wants to take the challenge?!)
Another great store I discovered was Kelley’s Pets in Fresno and Clovis. Although this place is much smaller, it has all the essentials you need for your pets. Plus the advantage of going to a place like Kelley’s is the employees are super knowledgeable about what is in their store and how to answer your questions. (I discovered this when the girl there solved my dog’s stinky breath problem!)
Kelley’s also had Niners and Raiders jerseys and leashes, as well as adorable outfits like pink raincoats and fleece jackets. But what really caught my eye was the stylish pet purses. A couple months ago, I watched a tiny yorkie who would have looked fabulous in one of these. Alas, my 35-pound beagle would not be feeling it at all.

Which begs the question: Do I dress my own dog? Well, I used to, but I quit trying after Grover kept acting like I was performing a special Chinese torture on him (pun intended). But he looked so cute in his t-shirts – when he wasn’t resisting!
I digress. The point of all this is to encourage you to check out local pet stores the next time you need something for a four-legged family member. It’s worth noting that both stores allow you to bring your dogs into the store and offer vaccines, and Whitie’s has pet adoptions on the weekends, just like those other corporate stores! So who needs Petsmart?!
