It’s fair season here in the Central Valley! While all fairs offer similar fun. Carnival rides, games, entertainment and of course food… one community does things a little bit different.
The Caruthers District Fair brings old-time charm. It’s the largest Free Gate Fair in California. That means it doesn’t cost anything to get in. That’s a huge savings for families.
This year’s theme is “There’s No Place Like Home.” You will no doubt feel like you have been transported to a 1950’s sitcom when you visit the Caruthers Fair.
The food booths are run by area church and school groups. You won’t just find corn dogs. Our Saviors Lutheran Church serves up their classic Abelskivers. The Lemoore Church of the Nazarene will offer smoked turkey legs. Washington Union High’s Band and Color Guard features tri-tip. Is your mouth watering yet?!
You’ll want to save room for dessert. The homemade pies are outstanding!
The Caruthers District Fair gets underway Wednesday, September 28th and runs through Saturday, October 1st. Gates open at Noon on Wednesday and at 10AM the other days of the fair.
Different entertainment acts will take to the stage throughout the fair. There are plenty of carnival rides and games to enjoy. You’ll have to pay for those, but remember, it was free to get in!
There’s livestock and exhibits to check out.
The Caruthers District Fair roots date back to 1923. It was established with the goal of promoting and encouraging agriculture and other related industries.
Saturday morning at 10AM there will be a parade. David and Velma Barber are the 2016 Grand Marshals. The couple first met at Caruthers High and married in 1958. David is the former superintendent of Raisin City Elementary School.
Each year someone leaves the fair in a brand new car! That’s right. I’ve known a couple of people who have won… so why not you?!
Raffle tickets are $5 dollars. There are drawings each night. This year’s grand prize is a Ford Mustang. The winning ticket will be picked Saturday night before the fair closes.
So, you might be wondering… where exactly is Caruthers? It’s about 20 minutes from Fresno. Just take 41 South. Make a right on Mountain View. Go about 2 ½ miles and make a left on Tahoe St and then another left on Raider and you are there.
Have fun!
