Underground Supper Series
I think we here at FresYes have proven over the past couple of years that there’s a lot of pretty darn cool things to do here in Fresno. But if you were to ask me what one of my favorite things is that I’ve ever done? That might just have to be Fresno’s Underground Supper Series. Seriously, it’s been months and I’m still dreaming about the sumptuous seven-course meal I had as part of a travel-themed supper club dinner.
Fresno’s Underground Supper Series was started as an experiment of sorts by event planner Amy Jaye of Posh & Posy and Jeromie Garza & Rod Hansen, the talented chefs and co-owners of The Painted Table. Over the course of six months, they hosted six secret, themed dinners at undisclosed locations. They picked the themes as they went along, and only told members where they would be dining a couple of days before the event.
The idea blew up. Though the original idea was to have more intimate gatherings, Amy started expanding the guest list to accommodate growing popularity. But in the end, the team felt they liked having smaller groups, so Fresno’s Underground Supper Series is now expanding to include multiple nights and two different types of series in 2017.
The first is in keeping with original concept, with six very diverse themes. The locations still won’t revealed until 48 hours before the event. The difference is there will be two consecutive nights to choose from when buying tickets, and all of the themes have already been announced. They are: Dinner in the Dark, Flirting with Flavor: An Aphrodisiac Dinner, Gastropub Craft Beer Crawl, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, From Roots to Leaves: A Vegan Feast, and Quantum Kitchen: A Molecular Gastronomy Experience.
“We have a running list of about 20 ideas we continually add and subtract from when planning our themes,” Amy said. “The time of year, seasonality of ingredients, and the themes that frankly gave us goosebumps when we thought about them made the cut.”
The second is the new Travel Supper Series. In sort of an amped-up version of the dinner I attended, it will feature cuisine from six international cities in six months. The cities will be Barcelona, Paris, Ireland, Morocco, Havana and Mongolia. The menus will be inspired by Chef Jeromie and Chef Rod’s travels this past summer.
“The Underground Supper Series was something we created to be experimental, and add a bit of mystery and intrigue to the evening. I think that resonates with a very specific, adventurous type of foodie,” Amy said. “But there are so many people who enjoy really good food but maybe aren’t so keen on the Underground/Secret part of what we do. The travel series might be more their style. It still lets you enjoy an evening filled with discovery and deliciousness, but is a bit more relatable.”
Both sets of series will run January through June of 2017. Each dinner will max out at 36 seats. Another new concept that the Underground Supper team just introduced is the “Golden Key VIP” subscription. At $720 a seat (or $120 per dinner), a subscription guarantees you a seat at every dinner in the series, a complimentary specialty cocktail per dinner, priority seating, and first dibs on purchasing tickets to non-supper club events and renewing your subscription for the summer/fall of 2017.
A maximum of 20 subscriptions (available to members now) will be sold for each of the Underground and Travel series. That means a total of 16 seats will be sold separately, for $135 each. (Trust me, the price tag is worth every penny!)
How do you buy tickets and subscriptions? You can sign up here to become an official member of Fresno’s Underground Supper Series club for free. If you can’t wait until 2017 for an Underground Supper event, you’re in luck. They will also be hosting several fun holiday dinners this fall and winter. These include: Not Your Mama’s Thanksgiving Feast on November 25th, It’s a Norman Rockwell Wonderful Life Christmas Story Dinner on December 8th, A Christmas Feast: French Reveillon on December 15th, and Feast of Seven Fishes on December 22nd. Again, these tickets will be available first to subscribers and then members.
