Continuing on in the series we’re on Page 7 and it’s all about Wine Grapes!
If you remember last post was all about land values, with the highest value being those planted for Raisins. It was $250 to $350 an acre. This page speaks more to the potential wine growers with an estimated land value of only $140 an acre.
They mention that Fresno County has a reputation of growing the best SWEET wine grapes in the U.S.? We know they do grown some sweeter varietals in the valley today but in modern times our Fresno County vineyards tend to grown more Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Barbera and Tempranillo. Viognier is the only fine white grape of note and that’s typically not a sweet wine. So why the emphasis on SWEET?
“Net returns of wine grape vineyards run as high as $140 per acre”
That’s interesting as we learned in just the page before that net returns for Raisins was only around $100.
So if we understand them correctly… Raisin Vineyards cost almost twice as much and yield 70% less? Interesting!
Next it talks a little about Orchards and mention apricots, peaches, nectarines and prunes, apples and quinces.
FUN FACT: In Genesis, the Bible mentions the “forbidden fruit.” Commonly identified as an apple, many people contend it was actually a quince.
