Mallory Gilbert knows what it’s like to soar. Involved in athletics from an early age, five years ago Gilbert turned her focus to pole vaulting and has been flying high ever since. But while her sport of choice takes this Clovis girl to new heights physically, she’s come up with another way to soar altogether: by encouraging others, and herself, to be open to opportunities as they present themselves and to learn to say yes.
Speaking of seizing opportunities, don’t miss your chance to see Gilbert in action as she competes in the 21st North American Pole Vault Championships at the Old Town Clovis Farmers Market tonight.
See Opportunity And Respond: SOAR. It’s a motto Gilbert has turned into a movement and something she practices daily. And she wants you to practice it as well. An opportunity can be small (like choosing a new Starbucks location at which to get your daily caffeine fix) or big (like deciding at 25 to dedicate your life to pole vaulting), but you’ve got to respond with intention.
As Gilbert continues to train her body as an athlete, which she now does at an elite training facility in Phoenix, she’s also training herself to take notice of the all the opportunities presented to her daily. She now does public speaking appearances to share with others her philosophy on life, which is deeply rooted in her Christian faith.
For right now, Gilbert is looking to seize a win for “Team Clovis” at the street vault championships tonight and whatever other opportunities present themselves while she’s home. Here, she talks about her athletic roots in the Clovis Unified school system, training alongside Olympians and her own Olympic aspirations, and her plans to make an impact that will outlast her pole vaulting career.
