“Even on a bad day, I still get a day at the zoo.” – Alex Alamar
Zookeepers are animal lovers and animal caretakers. They manage the diets and environments of animals in captivity. And, yes, that means they also have to “pick up” after animals. They keep records and observe behavior. They teach people about the animals in their charge.
But few zookeepers are as remarkable as Alex Alamar, the relief keeper at Fresno’s Chaffee Zoo. She may be surrounded by exotic animals on a daily basis, but her inimitable love of the job makes her a special creature in her own right. As an example: Alex spent Christmas Eve with her twin sister brushing up on animal facts via flashcards.
Her encyclopedic knowledge of the animals at the zoo is topped only by her enthusiasm for taking caring of them. Both of which are on full display when you talk to her. Seriously, if you’re lucky enough to encounter her among the Malayan tigers and ring-tailed lemurs on a visit to the Chaffee Zoo, ask a question and you will be blown away by her animal acumen and creature compassion.
And we haven’t yet factored in the incredible way she overcame a debilitating nerve disorder as a teenager (a feat motivated, in part, by her love of animals and one zoo in particular).
