Welcome to our latest interview, where we are about to indulge in yet some more sweet talk. And no, we’re not talking about sweet-talking your crush or sweet-talking your way out of a traffic ticket. Today, we’re diving again into the sugary world of candy, and more specifically, freeze-dried candy. Yes, you heard it right – freeze-dried candy! It may sound like a science experiment gone wrong, but trust us, we have a plan. Really? Really!
So tell us DD who are you, where did you come from, and what do you do?
My name is Dana Dee Estrada-Navarro born and raised in Southern California (Santa Barbara) I am 53 years old. I have 4 grown children and 10 grandchildren. I am married to my husband Jose who is a HVAC technician during the week and on the weekends he helps me with the Candy Business. We do pop ups 2-3 times a month at various locations. We have been in business going on 2 years.
Tell us about the business – why would anyone freeze dry candy?
We started DD’s Freeze Dried Treat’s 559 LLC about 2 years ago after I discovered Freeze Dried Candy and I would order it from another state I did not see anyone doing it in our area at that time so I thought it would be a fun business to start.
I also try to sneak in Freeze Dried Fruits and Veggie Snacks as well as I offer a Sugar Free line of my goodies. I am in a couple local retail stores here in town my goodies are also always available at Abigail’s Candy Shop in Sierra Vista Mall near Panera.
We do 2-3 pop up events around town monthly as well as I have a online website you can place orders and pick up locally at my home off Maroa and Garland Avenue 93704.
Ok, but why in the world would anyone freeze dry candy?
Our freeze drying process allows us to transform what was once a chewy candy into airy, light, crunchy and melt in your mouth texture.
Jaw tiring, hard to chew candies are in the past! Our candies offer a more concentrated flavor in each bite, leaving a lasting smile on your face. Not all of our candies melt instantly in your mouth. We also have some candies that are extra crunchy, like our sweet tarts and skittles.
Freeze dried candy is fun for everyone even if you have dentures or braces; our candy will allow you to enjoy your favorite candy once again.
Other than creating something very unique, what makes you stand out?
Freeze Dried Candy is popping up all over the place now. I take pride in my candy I try my best to keep it fresh and consistent. I add to the menu weekly. We have over 70 different items on our website currently.
When fresh fruit is available I try to incorporate healthy options into my menu. I do donate to a lot of school functions and try to give back to those who support me.
What is it that most people DON’T know about your business?
If you can’t find us at a local event or at Abigail’s Candy Shop you can always place a order online for local pick up. Pick up is off Maroa and Garland 93704. I have a pick up cooler located on my porch that I put orders in with the customers name on it and the customers pick up at their convenience.
I also do party favors for baby showers, birthdays, as well as gift bags or baskets for special occasions.
Besides always adding new items, what’s new coming up for you?
We will be adding a couple new retail locations that will be carrying out goodies but I can’t mention them yet but keep your eyes out for announcements on my Instagram and Facebook pages.
We will be a returning vendor at Fresno Rainbow Pride Event June 3rd at Fresno City College.
We will also be returning vendors for Clovis Night Out September 30th 4pm to Dark at McDonald Park off Temperance and Sierra.
