If you’ve been reading my blogs here at FresYes for awhile, you know there are three things I LOVE to share with you the most: local food, local coffee, and local small businesses. Last week, I shared with you a great new local coffee shop and I had such a great time on my visit there, I had to go back and take my husband over the weekend so he could try it and we could both enjoy something from their breakfast menu. (We tried two different chilaquiles dishes, and they were both awesome! Two thumbs way up.) After our visit to Mi Cafecito, we wanted to extend the support local love so we wandered across the street to Sour Milk gift shop on the recommendation of a friend.
Sour Milk is super bright and fun from the outside, and that’s a theme that continues on inside as well. The bright pink and yellow shop is located on Van Ness just South of McKinley in the Van Ness Village neighborhood of the Tower District. When you walk inside, you’re greeted with displays of eclectic and varied merchandise and fun and colorful décor. The entire place feels vibrant, artsy and retro in a really good way.
Sour Milk is “a curated gift shop for independent artists and brands” and is proud to offer a generous and varied selection of small things, art, gifts, and Sonny Angel collectibles. I personally was not familiar with Sonny Angel, so I needed to do a little research – but I learned that Sonny Angel is an adorable cherub figure collectible that comes wearing one of many (hundreds!) different hats/headpieces. They’re meant to bring you joy, and they’re sold in surprise packages so finding out which unique figure you got is part of the fun.
Besides Sonny Angel, some of the fun things you can find at Sour Milk include funny and witty stickers, rare and popular live plants, artist made greeting cards, spring décor, vintage goods, body care and fragrance products, keychains, tote bags, candles and much, much more! In addition to selling items from local artists, Sour Milk is also a participating venue for ArtHop this week (March 7th from 5-9pm).
Sour Milk’s normal operating hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 12pm – 5pm, making it a perfect place to go after your own Sunday brunch visit to Mi Cafecito for some great coffee and breakfast! I hope you’ll check out both local businesses soon, as I know you’ll love them, too.
