I love living in the valley for a lot of different reasons, one of which is being able to see the Sierra Nevada Mountains from pretty much any area of town. Lately that view has been obscured by smoke from the Rough Fire – currently only 30 miles away from our beloved town. Prayers and good will to all those fire fighters and home owners that have had to be evacuated.
This afternoon I had the pleasure of interviewing the lovely Ana Stone and Heather Heinks, both of Valley Air District.
Sadly the subject wasn’t a good one – we spoke about the Rough fire (mandatory evacuations continue), the quality of the air we are currently breathing and how the ash found on our cars can effect our kids and pets.
From the Facebook site of Valley Air:
Many areas are experiencing a cloud of visible ash falling from the sky. Please note that our RAAN monitors are designed to detect the fine particulates (called PM 2.5 which are microscopic in size and not visible to the human eye) that exist in wildfire smoke. Ash particles are much larger in size and will not be detected by our monitors. Therefore your area may be covered in ash, while our PM monitor reflects a moderate reading. If you can smell smoke and see ash, that is an indication that you should be treating air quality conditions as a Level 4 or higher. #healthcaution
