So, ZappCon happened. Did you go? As a stranger to the gaming world, I was drawn to the convention out of 100 percent pure curiosity, accumulated over weeks of hype and coverage leading up to the event.
Sci-fi fans, gamers, cosplayers and the like flocked to Valdez Hall at the convention center in downtown Fresno for two days of fellowship with other members of the tribe. I managed to slip in relatively unnoticed. As an outsider, I can’t speak to what a convention like this means to the “geeks” of the Valley, so I’ll let them tell you directly. I spoke with a handful of ZappCon attendees who were super sweet, super excited and dressed as characters I’d never heard of before. But they talked to me anyway, even though to them I must’ve been the geek. Check out what they had to say:
While most of the feedback I got about the convention was positive, some ZappConers thought there could have been more panels and that better notifications as to who (comic book artists, sci-fi actors and cosplay celebrities) and what could be expected would’ve been helpful in boosting turnout.
But that’s what next year is for, right? Fixing the bugs and making it a bigger, better event. The one thing that’s clear after this inaugural ZappCon is that there is no shortage of geeks in the Valley.
San Diego, you better watch out. Fresno just threw down the gauntlet.
