For someone who interviews people for a living, Ashley Ritchie is quick to admit that she’s terrible at fielding questions when the tables are turned. But turn the tables we did. The resulting conversation is nothing if not illuminating…and a little silly.
Ashley is co-anchor of the KMPH Fox 26 Ten O’Clock News. But most of you probably already know that, whether you’re a regular viewer or not. What you may not know is that Ashley is a Valley native, wife, mother of two, cancer survivor, inappropriate humor enthusiast and devout hater of cilantro.
Before a night on the anchor desk, Ashley sat down with me for what basically amounted to a brief recap of her life. There were funny moments, somber moments, surprises, lots of laughing…even a humorous spelling lesson and a Dust Bowl reference. Ashley Ritchie, this is your life. Let’s take a look.
But, now that we know about her life, let’s see where she stands as a journalist. The following is a list of six questions every conscientious media consumer should want to ask the people who deliver the news. Ashley’s been vetted and, I think, passes the test…even daring to question the questions. Typical journalist.
“Up Close and Personal” or “Good Night, and Good Luck”?
Ashley Ritchie: “Up Close and Personal.” I haven’t seen the other. Plus, I always loved me some Robert Redford!
“Anchorman”: Offensive or funny?
AR: Funny! But the second one was terrible.
Woodward or Bernstein?
AR: Both! Why do I have to pick? That’s like saying “Sally or Jessie?”, “Peanut or Butter?”
Have you ever said, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore”?
AR: No. But I’ve said a lot of other things that I definitely couldn’t say on air.
Do you watch “The Newsroom”?
AR: Heck yes!
Who brought more shame to the sanctity of journalism, Stephen Glass or Jayson Blair?
AR: I just had to Google both of these people. So I guess I’m not really qualified to answer that. To my credit, I wasn’t in “the biz” yet when either of these things happened! I know, I know, that doesn’t make ignorance acceptable.
