As we close out 2014 I’ve been thinking about events from this year that I unfortunately missed.
As life goes its hard to find time to get to all the events around FresYes but after seeing all the photo’s and reading the chatter on the interwebs I came up with a hot list of events to make sure to cover next year.
Two of these events are the long running Big Sandy a mountain bike race run for 10 solid years along the San Joaquin River Trail and considered one of the states best. Seems every other year or so the Big Sandy gets crushed by rain or snow…….some years both turning this MTB race into more than just a bike race under those conditions but a life event. The other is a newer event that races along the same trails named the SJRT 50 mile ultra, a running race harder than any FresYes has ever held and quickly becoming a classic. While I’m more of a 5 mile runner than a 50 mile guy its easy to romanticize about what it would be like to start running from Fine Gold Bay at the back of Millerton Lake then 25 miles up the San Joaquin and back on foot in one day……and survive.
For the foodie in us all I’m panning on making my way to Gazebo Gardens for the food truck showdown. Gazebo is a little slice of heaven right smack dab in the center of town topped with the best food trucks, brews and music making it a mandatory addition. In reality I could follow the trucks around all week but Gazebo gets top marks in this writers opinion. A cool summer evening with an ice cold beer, some soft music and gourmet food from a mobile restaurant cant be duplicated anyplace else in town.
Another classic part outdoor event is Vintage Days at Fresno State. Fun, food, games, art, cars and the list keeps getting longer year after year in this FresYes super classic weekend event. Perhaps I’m a sucker for the $1 rootbeer float or maybe its the fun I see my kids have when they go nuts over all the booths. Either way its hard to pass up a weekend cruising the campus at Vintage Days.
Consider we have the return of Fig Gig, Concerts in the Park, River park Salsa and a endless number of other outside events in and around our city and my imagination is already full of ideas for 2015.
Feel free to contact me at markdsasser@gmail.com if you have events or parts of FresYes you would like to see covered in the new year.
