Remember those New Year’s resolutions you made back in January? How’s that going for you?
If getting fit was on your list, back to school season marks the perfect time to get your fitness routine back on track. Think about signing up for a local race. Many are fundraisers for local charities and organizations.
There’s something for all levels of ability. So grab those running shoes and get moving!
Here’s a look at some of the races happening in September.
Pincushion Hill Climb, Friant
When: Saturday, Sept. 9
Cost: $30 (Registration ends Sept. 7)
This 1-mile race takes you straight up hill. It gets underway at the San Joaquin River Trailhead and ends at Pincushion Mountain. If you want more of a challenge, there’s also a “mountain goat” division which allows you to run the course more than once.
Journey 5K: A Run for Ryan, UC Merced
When: Saturday, Sept. 9
Cost: $15 (Prices increase the day of race)
This race on the campus of UC Merced pays tribute to the late Ryan Nunez. He was the head coach of the UC Merced men’s and women’s cross-country teams. The race is free for the first 150 UC Merced students to register.
Fresno Margarita Madness 5K Walk/Run
When: Saturday, Sept. 16
Cost: $40
This race is a bit of a fiesta! It’s a nationally produced theme run for walkers and runners who want to indulge in margaritas. It’s taking place at Woodward Park.
Smokey Bear Run 10K and 2-Mile Walk/Run, Bass Lake
When: Saturday, Sept. 23
Cost: $30 (Prices increase Sept. 1)
The Smokey Bear Run is a Bass Lake tradition. This marks the 30th year for the race. It’s held at 3,300 feet elevation. The start and finish line is at Recreation Point. The first 400 runners will receive a Smokey Bear 30th year collector’s pin.
Rivalry 5K Walk/Run, Tulare
When: Saturday, Sept. 23rd
Cost: $20 (18 and over), $10 (18 and under)
This race benefits the Tulare Joint Union High School Foundation. Funds raised go towards art, agriculture, academic and athletic programs.
Moo Mile and 5K Walk/Run, Tulare
When: Saturday, Sept. 30
Cost: $18 (Prices increase Sept. 9)
The City of Tulare Parks and Recreation Department is holding a race at Zumwalt Park. It pays tribute to the city’s dairy roots. The course is flat and fast. Participants will receive a t-shirt and snacks.
