Editors Note: What’s This? Are we a book review website now?
Well no. We’re still doing all the great things you’ve come to love about FresYes. However, this is a book review from Emma. She’s in 7th grade and a voracious reader. We loved it and thought it just needed to be shared and hope you do too! Have a reader in your home? We’d love to share their book review too.

Hi. I’m Emma Farris and this is my first article on here. Hopefully not my last (by which I mean if people like my book reviews than I’ll keep writing). So, yeah. I hope you like it. I’ll be doing book reviews on here as I am a BOOKLION, which basically means I LOVE to read (my family calls it an addiction, but I choose to call it a way of life). Reading might actually be a problem for me considering I read religiously. My dad says that I’m reading books that are bigger than he even thought of reading at my age. I basically hold my bookshelf in a sacred place and am possessive about my books (I may or may not treat them like small children). You may think I’m a little weird because of that but I honestly don’t care, I have my books to comfort me. Ok I’ll stop rambling now.
Dark Tide is the third book in the Waterfire Saga, the first book being Deep Blue, followed by Rogue Wave. Fantasy and adventure are my favorite genres, so this series automatically pulled me in with its collection of mermaids, magic, and of course, villains.
In the first book, Serafina, the heir to the throne, discovers that she has a completely different path to follow. Along with her best friend Neela and new acquaintances Becca, Ling, Ava, and Astrid, Sera must adventure across the ocean to uncover the truth about the fall of Atlantis. Deep in the depths though, is the monster Abbadon, created by rogue mage Orfeo, to destroy Atlantis and all its people. The six mermaids must find the six talismans of mages Merrow, Nyx, Navi, Sycorax, Pyhra, and, to their surprise, Orfeo. Why? Because there is a dark force trying to resurrect Abbadon and take control of the world, below the surface and above.
Over the course of the second book, Rogue Wave, the mermaids find that Rafe Mfeme, a rich entrepreneur, is in league with this mysterious villain and Sera’s uncle Vallerio. The race is on to find the talismans.
In Dark Tide, we follow the six as they have split up to search for their talismans. Sera, now a confident leader, has led the Black Fins, a rebel group, to strength. Neela, a fun and spicy girl, has joined her for moral support. Becca, the quirky note-taker, goes on her journey and along the way makes a very important discovery about the humans above. Ling, the practical omnivoxa, has been captured by Rafe Mfeme and finds some disturbing secrets. Ava, the blind prophet, continues to the Mississippi swamp, being chased by enemies that she cannot see, with a constant question burning in her mind. Astrid, the stubborn warrior, still doesn’t believe in her new destiny, until she meets Desiderio.
In this book, there is a lot more resolving personal issues, but with still a load of action. Jennifer Donnelly writes with a spirit that encourages trust and friendship. The relationship between the six mermaids is a sisterly one, which builds on the story. All the secrets and mysteries keep the book entertaining while adding even MORE character.
The Beginning: I usually get a little bored with the beginning of a book in the series that’s not the first one, only because a lot of the tie the author relays a lot of the information from the first one and explains it all over again. But once the author gets into the actual STORY, I’m hooked.
The Middle: The middle of the book is always the most action packed, as it contains the climax of the story. It HAS to be written well. This is the central point for that series changing plot twist! In Dark Tide, there was definitely lots of twists and turns, and not just the ones that we find one of the main characters navigating through.
The End: One word: Cliffhangers. It’s always hard to describe a book that ends on a cliffhanger, because you don’t know how you feel. Whenever my friends and I talk about a certain cliffhanger cough House of Hades cough written by a certain author cough Rick Riordan cough we can never decide if we should call it the worst or the best. Obviously, we’re furious that the author ended it this way, but it just made us want the next book even more. The same thing happened at the end of Dark Tide. Donnelly gave us the bait, and we took it. We hate it, but at the same time, we absolutely LOVE it. That’s how I feel anyways.
So I’ve gone over the big parts of the book, so you should get the gist by now. I definitely recommend picking up Deep Blue, Rogue Wave, and Dark Tide. Now I’m off to read and wait in agony for the fourth and final book in the Waterfire Saga, Sea Spell.
So I hope you liked my first review. Next time I’ll probably be doing a review on a book that’s by an author that is one of my all-time favorites. So that should be exciting. That’s all for now. BYE!
