FresYes is first and foremost a real estate company (in case you didn’t know), and it is the passion of Jason Farris (Mr. FresYes) and his team to help people find their perfect homes. But what happens after they achieve that goal? Now you have a big, beautiful house to fill with furniture, and one of the first things clients ask our agents is where they should go to buy it!
I went on a little adventure this week to try and find the best places to buy furniture- find out here. And of course, I tried to stay local as much as possible, which ruled out the big box chains for the purpose of this feature! What I found is that it may take a little work to shop local when it comes to furniture, but there are some real gems out there!
New Vision’s Re-Loved Home Furnishings
The biggest (and most hidden) treasure is probably New Vision’s Re-Loved Home Furnishings on West Shaw in Fresno. When I say it’s on West Shaw, it’s really in an office complex on a frontage road off Shaw, just east of Marks. (Got all that? No? No worries! Just map the address: 2569 W. Shaw Ave.)
New Vision was started by a pair of best friends with a passion for decor and an eye for design. Veronica Mechem and Amber Gorman started with staging homes for sale and then redesigning spaces for homeowners. Eventually, they decided to open their own store. They now scour estate sales and flea markets across the Valley for bargains, then clean and sometimes restore the pieces. They specialize in the Mid-Century modern style, which is what really sets them apart. Their finds are so coveted that customers will drive from Southern and Northern California to pick them up, despite the fact that the ladies don’t run an official online store, only an Instagram and Facebook page.
The really neat thing is the way Veronica and Amber transform their suite of offices into living spaces, changing the designs each time they get a new piece of furniture in the store. Couches, end tables, wall art, dressers – New Vision’s got it all. They’ve even got an amazing bar cart, because guess what? They’re obsessed with vintage bar ware, and thanks to them, now so am I. Check out these amazing glasses from 1960s artist Dorothy Thorpe!
The Vintage Market at 601
If Mid-Century modern’s not really your jam, you can head a little farther east down Shaw to The Vintage Market at 601, across from Whole Foods (look for the orange flags). It’s more of a collaborative, wide-ranging antique store that specializes in interior design. In fact, the shop’s collaborators will work with you to design rooms in your house.
There is a lot of ground to cover at The Vintage Market, but it’s definitely a place to find some great furniture that could be a centerpiece in your home! I basically wanted to take these entire set of furniture and decor with me and build myself a fabulous library.
Also, how amazing is this buffet? I can imagine half a dozen ways to use this piece!
It should also be noted that The Vintage Market regularly participates in ArtHop, which is a perfect pairing. In just the past couple of months, they have hosted a photographer and a furniture designer who makes pieces out of iron, reclaimed wood and glass. They haven’t announced their next event yet, but be on the lookout on their Facebook page!
Revival 23
If you love upcycled furniture but don’t want to (or can’t) put in the work yourself, then Revival 23 in Old Town Clovis is the place for you. I’ve previously featured this store for their adorable clothes and accessories, but a lesser-known fact is that owner Teresa Pries sells repurposed furniture and decor.
In addition to Teresa’s extremely good taste, the amazing thing about Revival 23 is that they will sell you almost anything that’s not bolted down. As, in she will sell you the vintage stool out of the dressing room and the gorgeous cabinets where she is displaying her jewelry and bath products. That’s because she brings most of these pieces in with the intention selling them, and then just works them into the clothing and accessories facet of her store!
Speaking of cabinets, here is a A Guide on Refacing Your Cabinets that you might want to read if you are interested in revamping your cabinets.
Revival 23 is located in the Dewitt Building on Pollasky in Old Town Clovis, near House of JuJu. You can follow their ever-changing inventory on Facebook and Instagram.
Brick & Mortar
By now, I know you’re saying, OK, Joanne, but where can I find some new furniture? I’ll be honest, it’s hard to find quality AND local when it comes to stores that sell new furniture. But one store that definitely impressed me was Brick & Mortar, a small shop located at 618 Fifth Street in Old Town Clovis. Brick & Mortar specializes in high quality wood furniture and luxe textiles.
This is the place to go if you want a beautiful new dining set or a gorgeous, comfy couch where you can pick the color and fabric. Plus, as a bonus, they’ve got some local art on the walls that you can pick up for your home, too! You can find out more here on their website.
So those are a few of my suggestions if you’re looking to buy some furniture. Whether you’ve just bought a new home (hopefully with FresYes!) or want to freshen up a space, I hope this helps you find what you are looking for!
