If you are from the FresYes area, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of Kearney Mansion. I remember learning about it in school, along with the Meux Home (which I love). I’ve toured the Meux Home, but I’ve not toured Kearney Mansion, even though my daughter has. I’m going to have to admit that when I was younger I didn’t really pay much attention to history. I thought it was boring. Perhaps I didn’t have the right teachers, or the desire. Now, as an adult, I love history. It’s fascinating to think about how people lived many years ago. How people fought, struggled, or stood up for what they believed in. Many people worked hard to make their lives better. Many people had big hopes and dreams for their future.
This was the case for M. Theodore Kearney. He was born in 1842. The 1800’s!! He came to California in 1867. He was a business man, farmer and was associated with the California Raisin Growers Association. There is much to read about him, and you can do so here. There is also so much to read about the mansion, and how it came to be. You can take tours of the mansion, visit for a special event, or you can simply go and have a picnic at the park.
The park is great for holding historic events. During October Kearney Park is home to the Civil War Reenactment. I use to live less than 5 minutes away from Kearney Park, and during the Civil War Reenactment, I could hear the cannons going off from my house. It was kind of cool. Anyway, this weekend they are having another event-the Renaissance Faire.
I’ve personally never been to a Renaissance Faire, but many of my friends have. They love it. From what I’ve read/heard there will be a battle pageant for King Henry VIII, jousting, sword fighting, weaving and archery demonstrations, vendors and food. My daughter’s school is doing a field trip to the Renaissance Faire on Saturday, and I think we may go. I mean, I really should. I talk about all these fun things to do around Fresno, so I should experience some of these new things. I’m curious to see lots of people in period dress. I’d also like to learn more about that time era and watch a real jousting! Okay, maybe not real one, but you know. Oooh, and what about the food?! I wonder what kind of food they ate during that time? (I’m pretty sure they didn’t have cupcakes.)
If you’re planning on going here is some of the important info:
Times:
Saturday, November 8th, 2014 10:00 a.m. to dusk
Sunday, November 9th, 2014 10:00 a.m. to dusk
Admission:
Entrance fee is $10.00 per person.
$8.00 for kids and seniors.
$1 off with a canned food item.
I think there is also a $5.00 car entry fee, but I’m not completely sure-I’ve read conflicting things on different sites.
Okay, that’s it, I’ve made up my mind…I’m going to check it out this weekend! You should too!! If for no other reason than to experience the beautiful scenery on Kearney Boulevard. (Kearney Boulevard is lined with palm trees. It’s a spectacular sight!)
