I’m one of the All Things FresYes authors. This means I can pretty much write about whatever I want. I like this freedom. I can write about things I like, places I’ve visited, people I’ve met or things I’ve seen. Each week I look ahead and try to find all the fun things FresYes has to offer, or events that are happening. In doing so, I feel like I’ve become the What To Do Around Fresno author. I feel like all I share with you guys are places to go and have fun. I was starting to think that maybe I needed to find some new things to write about. However, it occurred to me that y’all may actually like hearing about things going on around town. You may not know about some of the places I’ve visited. It also occurred to me that Fresno has SO MUCH to offer!! Seriously! I’m shocked that I haven’t run out of things to write about (I’m sure I’ve just jinxed myself). I’m also shocked that there are so many new things that I’ve experienced. I’m a Fresno native, how can some of these places be new to me?!
Well, last month I did just that-experienced something new-again!
My friend wanted to see a movie put on by Fresno Filmworks. They show a movie every second Friday of the month, down at the Tower Theater. The movie last month was May In The Summer. This was my first experience watching a movie at the Tower Theater, and let me tell you, I really liked it! They had two showings of the movie, and because I like to go to bed with the sun, we went to the early showing. It was just like a normal movie theater, in that there were drinks, popcorn and candy. However, it didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
May In The Summer was about a woman who traveled to Jordan for her wedding. Her mother and father lived there, her sisters traveled there for the wedding, and her finance would travel there shortly for the wedding as well. The story was mainly about how she discovered what she really wanted for her life. Through the discovery process, she bonded with her sisters, mother and father (who was divorced from her mother). I really liked the movie. It wasn’t what I had expected, but I liked it. I liked the grittiness of it. The reality of life. The all consuming feelings one can have when they are in a relationship, good or bad. One of the things I liked most was looking at the scenery of Jordan.
When the movie was over, the person who wrote, directed and starred in the movie, Cherien Dabis, was part of a discussion. How amazing to have someone famous and talented in our midst! Well done Fresno Filmworks, well done.
On our way out I grabbed a flyer for the movie for this month, which happens to be Life After Beth.
The show is this evening. There are two showings, 5:30 and 8:00. If you want to see a clip or read more about it, check out Fresno Filmworks.
If you’re looking for something new to do tonight, go see this movie! You’ll love the atmosphere and the people. And, if you know anything about me, that’s what makes my experiences so great-the people.
I really like how Fresno Filmworks brings independent films to the valley. They really want us to have a meaningful experience at the movies. They want us to love the cinema, and gain some appreciation of movies. Movies we may not see at our local theater. Fresno Filmworks gives us opportunities to experience something new and cultural. If you have the chance, out out and support them. If you are already busy this Friday evening, there is always the second Friday of November. Mark your calendars now! Find a sitter now! Plan your dinner now! (Wait, that one is impossible, I don’t even know what I’m having for dinner tomorrow.)
Support Fresno Filmworks. You can also be cool like me and find them on Twitter and Facebook. Tell them I sent you. You won’t get anything for it, other than a funny look, but still tell ’em. 😉
Now…I wonder what fun thing I can find going on next weekend.
