1. Fresno Filmworks Presents “Being 17”
Fresno Filmworks will present its monthly offering tonight at the Tower Theatre. This month’s movie is “Being 17,” a French coming-of-age film. There will be two showings, one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 8:30 p.m. [Details]
2. Martin Luther King Jr. Events

4. The Purple Ones at Fulton 55
Returning to Fresno to get funky, of course, The Purple Ones will pay homage to Prince with a live show Saturday starting at 9 p.m.at Fulton 55. [Details]
5. Writers Resist: Fresno Louder for Free Expression
Local authors spanning different genres will gather Sunday at Mia Cuppa Café from 2-4 p.m. to read as they recommit themselves to the ideals of compassion, free speech, and equality. [Details]
6. MLK Day Bald Eagle Hike
If you’re looking to get away from screens for awhile, join the San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust for a bit of hiking and Bald Eagle spotting. Meet at the River Center at 8 a.m. Monday. [Details]
7. “This is a Creation Story: Merritt Johnson and the Unnamed Collective” Exhibition Opens
Beginning Tuesday you can view this exhibition—the work of a collection of multimedia artists who positioned themselves as water protectors at Standing Rock, N.D., in opposition to the North Dakota Access Pipeline—for free at the Phebe Conley Art Gallery at Fresno State from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. [Details]
8. TB&J: Tacos, Brew & Jams
This monthly gathering at Tioga Sequoia Brewing Company is for anyone who is a fan of tacos, beer, and music, which is … everyone? January’s event, which takes place Thursday from 5-10 p.m., includes food from Los Toritos Taco Truck and live music from Jo Nathan. [Details]
9. Nate’s Silent Movies at Full Circle: “The Last Laugh”
