Welcome back to the Declutter Series!
How did clearing your mind go? (Remember to join in on the conversation on Instagram @FresYes – or on Facebook – the hashtag is #FresYesInsider)
This week we’ll focus on tidying up your home.
Have you ever heard the saying ‘There’s a place for everything and everything has its place.’?
The first step of finding the place for everything, is to create the space for your needs. You have to think about how you’re going to use it and the ergonomics and functionality of every area of your home.
The first question to ask yourself when organizing is, “Can you access the item you’re about to organize easily on a day to day basis?”
If it’s something you use a lot — put in a place that’s easy to get to. In contrary, your Christmas lights are needed once a year, so that makes sense to hide away.
As you move though this list, my advice is to tackle only one project at a time.
Here’s how I’d begin to declutter each area of your home:
- First, remove everything from a space. Let’s say you start with your bathroom, take everything out of your cabinets, drawers, showers, etc.
- Next, throw away what you don’t need. Trust me, you’ll probably have lots of half used Shampoos.
- Then, assess what your needs are now that you have clear space. Let’s say you’re organizing the bathroom counter. Create the spaces and places for the things that you need. Have things matching or labeled and containers that are pleasing to the eye and control clutter — make it easy!
Not long ago, I got the opportunity to interview a local organizing expert in my community, Leslie Halsall, here’s her sage advice:
“Put like uses and like activities together. When it comes to your closet, all formal should go together, likely in the back. Unless you’re a big power couple, your formal clothes and shoes and bags are likely your least used clothes. Then, when it’s time to go out, you can go to one place and get everything,” Halsall said, “Same goes for the bathroom and kitchen spaces, it is so helpful to keep like items together. You put your cough and cold medicine together, for example, then toilet paper and cleaning supplies together in the bathroom for quick access.”
If Halsall could suggest one easy project to make your life easier, she says, “Label what’s in your garage — and put everything you need in that one container. For example, if you are storing Christmas lights like we mentioned earlier, pack them neatly and include hardware you’ll need when it’s time to rehang. When labeling, write in big enough letters that even the older generation can see it.”
There you have it, FresYes Insiders – now go make some cleaning magic!
(Oh, and if you don’t want to do this yourself – here’s a guide to the best in Fresno.)
Wishing you Health & Happiness,
Gabi
