It’s no secret that most Americans have a less than optimal diet. In fact, we’re seeing more people dying from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer today than in quite some time.
It’s also no secret that the system is stacked against us — the food that’s readily available isn’t always the highest quality, and there are so many crazy demands on our time that often unhealthy convenience foods seem like the only option.
But there are things we can all do, one small step at a time, to clean up what we eat that can have an enormous impact on our health. Geeks Health can help you get on the right track towards a healthy lifestyle.
Here are my tips for changing up your diet for the better:
Stop eating out SO much.
This is a tough one for lots of us. Our time is so stretched that it seems like the only choice is to pick up something after work or grab lunch instead of bringing it.
But study after study shows that restaurant food is loaded with sodium and unhealthy fats that are wreaking havoc on our bodies. Limiting the number of times we indulge on take out is the single easiest step we can take to trim our waistlines. AND it’s a great way to improve your finances too. Just think about all the money you could save if you cooked at home more often.
A couple of hours meal prepping on a Sunday can mean that you can have healthy lunches ready to go all week. And changing your mindset about the convenience of eating out goes a long way, too. When you start to think of creative ways to get dinner on the table quickly, it can actually be fun
There are so many diets out there to choose from nowadays. There are experts touting the benefits of keto, paleo, vegan, low fat/high carb. It’s impossible to know for sure whos’ advice is solid.
The problem is, the right diet is different for each individual. What works for one, may not work for someone else.
But the bottom line is, every single person can benefit from eating more vegetables. I know it may not sound exciting, but vegetables are the best source of beneficial antioxidants, heart healthy fiber, and they are great for regulating blood sugar. There’s no other choice available on this planet that’s healthier for us.
Try incorporating just one more vegetable a day to your diet than you already do, and build up more from there.
Drink more water.
Drinking water helps us in two ways — one, it helps flush out toxins, and two, it helps you feel full even when you haven’t eaten.
Every single system in our body relies on proper hydration, and that’s why it’s so crucial for us to drink enough water. Many people who are trying to lose weight find that they are able to consume less food if they are drinking more water. And if you’re focusing on staying hydrated with good old H2O, that means you’re not drinking sugary drinks like soda, tea, or energy drinks…which means you’re cutting out one of the biggest sources of calories and harmful sugars in the Standard American Diet. It’s a win-win!
