Is there anything better than a great scoop of ice cream in the summer? (The answer is, “No, Joanne, there is not!) And sure, you can keep a quart in your fridge. But it’s definitely not the same as getting a cone from your favorite neighborhood ice cream place. Or how about a donut ice cream sandwich?
Yes, you read that right. Ice cream between a donut. Because Fresno is an amazing place and the local men behind the new G’s Creamery are geniuses. Officially, it’s called a sweet bun, because actually using a donut wouldn’t work as well for sandwiches. But you get the concept.
[The sweet buns] we have to make a certain way so it just suits the ice cream and it’s not just like a donut,” said Gary Sangha, one of the two men behind G’s Creamery. “The thickness, the texture, the density, all of that, it’s part of it.”
This is the kind of thought, care and innovation that Gary and his business partner, Felix Reynaga, have put into every aspect of G’s Creamery, which just opened last week on the Southwest corner of Bullard and West. Gary and Felix are longtime friends and high school classmates who have lived in the Bullard and West area all of their lives. They started making ice cream just for fun, and eventually decided to turn their hobby into a way to give back to their neighborhood.
“What the G stands for, it’s slang, it means neighbor and friend and that’s our sole objective,” Gary said. “Just to bring in a good product to the neighborhood. This is for the neighborhood and for the community.”
The ice cream at G’s Creamery is all organic and made at a local off-site production kitchen. You can, of course, get it in scoops and cones as well as between two buns. The recipes are a fusion of unique flavors, some drawing inspiration from the men’s respective heritage. Gary is Punjabi, and the Indian Cardamom Chai is a popular flavor in India. Felix is Mexican and has a love for Cinnamon Churros – and personally, I think that one is not to be missed! Other fun choices include Peanut Butter & Jelly and Salted Caramel Pretzel. Even the “basic” flavors are anything but.
“Even our vanilla, you know, it’s Madagascar Vanilla. We’re not using any extract, we use vanilla bean in it,” Gary said. “The Melted Chocolate, we pour a hot base over the chocolate bars so it gives that velvety texture to it.”
G’s Creamery itself has a fun, welcoming vibe, with both indoor and outdoor seating. It’s open until midnight on weekends because the team wanted to make sure neighborhood kids had a safe place to be.
“We’ve been here all our lives,” Gary said. “We wanted to bring a good quality product to the neighborhood. Just a spot where family and friends can get together and just hang out.”
If the two times I stopped by were any indication, G’s Creamery is already fast becoming a destination. Gary said the response has been surprising.
“We’ve gotten amazing feedback. … I didn’t expect it to be like this honestly. But I love it. Everybody’s really enjoying the ice cream, enjoying the store, everything. So it’s been very positive.”
Even if you don’t live in the Bullard and West neighborhood, G’s Creamery is definitely worth whatever drive you have to make! You can check them out on Facebook and Instagram for more information. It’s going to be another hot week, so now is the perfect time to go!
