Up until about six years ago, I didn’t really think about eating local, nor did I know much about its value. I didn’t take the time to think about where my food came from, and there was no difference between chain and local restaurants to me. In fact, I was really excited when the Cheesecake Factory came to Fresno (*all foodies cringing now*). But there hadn’t been any big “buy local” campaigns, and the ideas surrounding that movement were pretty foreign at the time.
Then, as I got more involved with Fresno-centric activities and people, I started falling in love with things like the Fait Accompli from Westbrook Wine Farm, Masumoto peaches, Berry Lady blueberries and all the fun eating events at the Vineyard Farmers Market. I met passionate chefs like Chris Shackelford from Trelio Restaurant (and his awesome brother Mike). I became the second half of TasteFresno (R.I.P., but there are still so many yummy recipes here), an online place celebrating local food culture. From there, I learned about the local Slow Food Movement, and the overall community that has honored food for decades before I was even born. Food in Fresno is about so much more than the excellent quality of our produce; it’s about the people that produce, eat, and cherish every morsel, together.
So now I’m wondering, where does the FresYes! community stand? I’m curious, so I came up with this 3-minute survey (10 questions total). There are no right or wrong answers; this is all in good fun. Please take the time to answer these questions. I’ll post the results next week!
