So. Some storm, huh?
Here in the Valley—in much of California, actually—it’s been raining like crazy. Last year, the weather folks called it El Niño. This year, it doesn’t seem to have a name, but maybe we can call it El Diablo?
People living in Clovis would probably be okay with that. I was in the area this morning and was beyond surprised to come across what looked like a scene from The Perfect Storm. Take a look at this photo taken near Bullard and Armstrong:
Looks like a canal, but that’s an actual street. Crazy, right?
Homeowners in the area are clearly going to be in danger of having some issues with flooding. Here in the FresYes office, we’re getting lots of calls from buyers who have purchased a home in the last few years saying, “Oh my goodness, my yard is flooded!” or “There’s water all over my patio.” They’re concerned the previous homeowners didn’t disclose a drainage issue.
But here’s the thing. We haven’t seen rain like this in years. Drought, remember? Even last year’s El Niño was weaker than predicted. So it’s not that they didn’t disclose a known condition—rather, they just didn’t know there was a condition.
Sometimes hidden issues come up that could never have been predicted at the time of purchase. All we can do in times like this is cross our fingers, hope for the best, and maybe make sure our insurance plans are up-to-date.
And, if you’re in need of sandbags, the city of Clovis and Fresno County have got you covered with information about that, as well as some great general preparedness tips for how to protect yourself and your family during storms.
Stay safe out there!
