If you’ve never been to a rodeo, you don’t know what you’re missing! Rodeos are a popular form of entertainment all over the world, spanning all ages and communities, creating an atmosphere of both excitement and danger. One of the most beloved parts of a rodeo is the rodeo clown, who functions as both protection and amusement for attendees. Another aspect is the livestock featured, where attendees can see prized animals from all over the country.
As one of the top twelve rodeos in the nation, the Clovis Rodeo is a major stop for the cowboys and cowgirls on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) tour. Clovis Rodeo is known for having some of the best bucking stock in rodeo and that turns out the top cowboys and cowgirls in the sport, which results in great entertainment for fans.
Since the early days of the last century, springtime in Clovis has always meant harvesting crops and driving your livestock down to the rail lines to be shipped. When all the local cattle ranchers got to town, they wanted to find out who was the best at different ranching activities. Today, springtime in Clovis means it’s time for the rodeo. This annual event brings in approximately thirteen million dollars to the Central Valley and locally. Clovis plays host to 450 cowboys, 70 cowgirls, 746 animal athletes, and 700 volunteers. It’s been reported that over 10,000 people come through the gates each day.
Plans are already underway for the 106th Rodeo, which is set for April 22-26, 2020. The first thing visitors will see is the construction of a new entrance to the rodeo grounds. The new construction will also create four lanes of traffic running into the rodeo lot in order to ease access in and out of the event. In addition, new for 2020 is a digital message board, which will be installed along Clovis Avenue. The rodeo is also expanding to five days, with the first performances happening Wednesday through Sunday. What will not change is when the rodeo concerts will take place – they will remain on Thursday and Friday nights, and the parade and dance will continue to run as normal.
This year’s Rodeo brought country singer, Russell Dickerson, to perform at the rodeo’s opening night and Aaron Watson on Friday night. In previous years, Chris Janson and Parmalee have performed at the Clovis Rodeo. Country music superstar, Keith Urban, was the rodeo’s first country act.
Even though the rodeo began more than 100 years ago, it continues to be one of the best ways to celebrate Clovis’ western way of life. In fact, it’s one of the largest and most popular rodeo events in the west. In 2018 the Clovis Rodeo was voted as one of the region’s most popular events by the Fresno Business Journal readers. As the event grows in popularity, so does it’s charitable efforts. The Clovis Rodeo reported that more than $250,000 was contributed annually to local charities and nonprofits and the rodeo has an impressive economic impact of $13 million in the region.
