Last week, in our “How local are you?” foodie quiz, 455 of you gave us your thoughts. Thank you! Many of you shared how important it is to focus on locally made and grown items. I’ll have lots to say later about this, but today I’m just going to share a summary of data collected. Here we go.

Q6: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO EAT LOCALLY?
Out of 195 responses:
Many said that it means to eat products grown or made within a certain mile radius of where you live (0, 10, 20, 50, 200, 250 miles mentioned).
- 15% said it means to eat/purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables.
- 47% said it means to eat at locally-owned restaurants; no chains.
- 37% said it means to do both (consume local produce and local restaurants).
- 1% had other responses.
Q8: EVALUATE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS.
- It’s important to shop for locally-owned food items. 89% agree or strongly agree.
- I pay special attention to my food labels to see if the product is made locally. 60% agree or strongly agree.
- Shopping at my local grocery store is the same as “buying local.” 69% disagree or strongly disagree.
- The price of my food is more important to me than the source (where it came from). 51% disagree or strongly disagree.
- Convenience plays a huge factor in whether I buy local food or not. 45% agree or strongly agree. 27% neutral.
- When considering restaurants, I usually choose locally-owned establishments. 72% agree or strongly agree.

93% said locally grown fruits and vegetables. Specific produce mentioned: Corn, peppers, okra, artichokes, leafy greens, squash, cilantro, onion, green onion, mushrooms, Asian veggies, black-eyed peas, zucchini green beans, tomatoes, avocados, grapes, figs, melons, Korean melon, cherries, stone fruit (mentioned: white peaches, nectarines, pluots, plums, apricots), oranges (and orange juice), berries (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries), apples, mangos, cantaloupe, Armenian cucumber

26% – Awareness. Need to promote local restaurants and chefs (who focus on local), and local stores in general, need online guides to local items sold in grocery stores, local restaurants who focus on local.
21% – Convenience. Need more farmers market locations, local grocery stores, or too hard to go all over town for everything.
18% – We’re Awesome. Fresno is doing a great job already promoting these things.
10% – Product/Store Labeling. Need to identify what’s local in all stores with clear markings.
10% – Price. Too costly to eat local.
10% – Other. Or “I just forget.”
6% – Restaurants. More need to serve local food or highlight local in their menus.
