Technology is a wonderful thing, y’all. I know that might seem like an obvious statement at this point, but I recently came to appreciate it that much more after having gallbladder surgery and a complicated, six-week recovery afterwards. Specifically, I loved technology’s ability to help me still procure good food when I couldn’t move very well.
Because I had to eat clean, I became obsessed with poke bowls at Butterfish California Poke, a local restaurant FresYes reviewed last year when it first opened. If you’ve never heard of poke (poh-kay) or this restaurant, I describe Butterfish as serving sushi bowls—but it’s so much more than that.
In addition to raw sushi fish and related toppings, Butterfish offers chicken, steak, shrimp, and—my personal favorite—cooked real crab (not the cheap canned stuff but chunky, crab sandwich quality). And you don’t have to get it on a bowl of sushi rice. There’s brown rice, a super-grain mix, salad greens, wonton chips, and kelp noodles. The whole thing can be finished off with a variety of toppings and sauces; the combinations are basically endless.
The Butterfish app
In just a year, Butterfish has become so popular that they just opened a second location at Herndon and Fowler (its original restaurant is at Friant and Fresno). Customers can order at the counter and dine in at either location, giving you a chance to see the ingredients buffet-style before deciding what you want. But what really sets Butterfish apart for me is their pick-up system.
The Butterfish app is a rare offering from a local company, and it’s a breeze to use. Just log in and pick one of the signature bowls off the menu, or create your own. The app saves your custom bowls from each order, which I love, because it took me months to find my perfect combination, and I don’t want to try and recall each ingredient every time I order!
Meals are paid for through the app, so all you have to do is wait for the Butterfish staff to put your bowl together. For me, that is usually the length of time it takes for me to drive to either location, about 10-15 minutes.
Conveniently, there is designated app pick-up parking right in front of a drive-thru style window at the Fresno location. The Clovis location does not have parking in front because of where the building is situated, but it’s still a super short walk to the pick-up window. All you have to do at the window is give your name, and they’ll hand you your order. That’s it! So easy!
Dine in for a different kind of “app”
If dining in is more your speed, I highly recommend visiting the new Clovis location for another kind of app. They have an expanded menu with “hot apps” of the appetizer, not iPhone, variety:
• Tokyo Fries (sweet potato fries with a sweet and spicy drizzle sauce)
• Maitake Mushrooms (gluten-free, tempura-battered mushrooms with a curry ranch dipping sauce)
• Sriracha Shrimp (crispy battered shrimp with a sweet and spicy drizzle sauce)
I tried the Sriracha Shrimp, and they were SO good. I will be dining in again soon just so I can eat more of them!
The Butterfish app is available on both iTunes and Google Play. You can find the links for download on their website. You can also follow Butterfish on Facebook.
Now please excuse me while I go order my next bowl!
